First System

So I finally got everything installed.

Car - 2001 Toyota Camry

Battery - Optima Yellow Top

Head Unit - Kenwood KFC-x395

Front - Kicker RS components

Rear - Kicker KS 6x9's

Amp - Kicker 350.4

Subs - Kicker L3 2 12s (Kicker box)

Amp - Kicker 750.1

Ok, first of all, I would like to say that I don't know too much about tuning systems. But I do know that I have more sub than I do amp. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/eyebrow.gif.fe2c18d8720fe8c7eaed347b21ea05a5.gif The subs are rated at 400RMS. Well...the installer said he set the sub amp at 10/15. My question is: if I raise the sub output on the head unit (currently on -3 out of +15) what does that really do? Can turning this up clip the amplifier?...is this the same as gain?? Also, don't know if it matters, but the outputs on the head unit are 4v.

Next, how much better would a custom box sound than the Kicker prefab box? It sounds good to me, but then again, I really don't know what good sounds like. I would assume that since the box came with the woofers in it, then its already tuned/ported for those specific speakers...Am I wrong here?

Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

the gain knob isnt a volume knob. it is relative from the voltage on your head unit to your amp. so yes turning the sub setting from -3 to +15 without adjusting your gain on your amp accordingly will cause clipping. and a custom built box is way better than a pre fab because a designer on here can build it to spec via your woofer and acoustics to your car.

Get a DMM or go somewhere that has one. Most shops will do it for a nominal fee. The Kicker 750.1 amp you have is probably around 930 or so. Did it come with a birthsheet (I mean did you buy it new)? And to answer if a custom box will do better than the "Livin' Loud" box you have the answer is yes. It's all kind of dependent on what you want out of the subs. What kind of music you listen to is a question you'll be asked.... The Kicker box is for SPL. I never checked the tuning on them but I believe their small and tuned high.

DMM=digital multi meter?...what will this do for me? And yes, the amp did come with a birthsheet (bought new) and it says 928 RMS. As far a custom box goes, what is the smallest that I could get for the L3's?...What I am really getting at, is being able to freely remove my spare tire without having to fiddle with the sub box. What size box can you think of that would still allow access to the spare in a 2001 Toyota Camry? What I would really like to do is something like

or

Would a trunk design like either of these allow the L3's to still sound decent?

The Kicker boxes are very peaky. In the "higher" bass regions it'll get pretty loud pretty fast, but start to give out on the low lows. A custom box will make it more musical and give u more intensity down low, possibly moving more air.

But, the question is, do u have enough space to properly port both 12" squares? Contact a box builder in the vendor section and have them design one based on your goals, preferences, equipment, etc.

i would hit up any designer on here and they will hook you up no problem. just go the the vendor section and pick one. they are all more than capable of getting you hooked up. and they are all very cheap for the work that they produce.

They'll do the plans for you and you can build it yourself. That's about the cheapest option. @pro\-rabbit also has a deal. He sends you the plans and the sheet of MDF or Birch already cut up. You've got to glue it together.

or if you have the money they can build and ship for you. you pretty much decide on what you want to do. they will all work with whatever you need done. they can build it for you, give you blueprints, or like @DoesDad said send you precut pieces of wood that you just need to glue together.
