first install

Yeah you can get some nice crossovers and eqs. Some vehicles output a full range to the front speakers and use the rear more for fill. May want to make sure your getting a full spectrum from the rears. Does your amp have high level inputs? I would highly recommend that over a loc.

Your going to need a loc, as stated. Personally I would tap into the rear speakers at the speaker, closer to your amp.
pretty much ^^
splicing in to the rear speakers would be a hell of alot easier than going all the way from the headunit
you guys don't do many installs, tapping into a speaker in a door with a LOC is a waste of time and effort and it looks like crap. tapping into the rear speakers behind the factory deck makes it easier to tap without extending the speaker leads to meet with the LOC. as well as it gives a location to easily hide the LOC. it's pretty simple to tap with a military style wrap or solder.
