Fiberglass box?

There is no set thickness, if the surface is relatively flat it will be a lot more weak than if it is curved. A good test is just as you said, stand on it, if it flexes then you need more strength. A great way to add strength is to glass nylon rope on the insides of flat surfaces and then add more fiberglass mat over it, this creates curves within the enclosure that actively add much more strength to the otherwise relatively smooth surface. IF you like glassing be sure to check out my youtube channel in my sig.
