few questions before i start my new box build

im probably starting my new box today but i need some advice first....

if i cut an inch-inch and a half off of the port length, how much will the tuning change?

also, if i run a dowell rod through the port for bracing, will it negativly affect anything?

its going to be the same design i had for my current box, im just going to tweek some things to make it better/stronger..........
