evan's install

I'm finally done taking my truck apart, so now I can actually work on getting it back together. I'm not doing a crazy impressive install worth a lot of money or anything, but I thought I would post an update anyway. I will be putting in a cd player two 5.25's and a 10" sub all powered by a 4 channel amp.

I sanded down the spots of surface rust on both sides and exposed a hole at about the same spot on both sides of the cab. I cut out and bent some sheet metal to have my buddy weld in place, but he wasn't able to do a weld all the way around because the old sheet metal was too thin (after 27 years of rusting). He was able to tack it into place

and then I used JB Weld to seal the rest of the way around.

I ground down the mess I made with the JB Weld and then painted it.

Today I installed my roll of Raammat that I bought a few days ago.

It went really well. It was easy to work with, and I'm happy with the results. I definately recommend the product and the company. Rick is great to deal with.

i have to say wow that looks clean as hell, makes me wanna do the same to mi car. the sound deadening thing that is.

i think he painted it to cover the exposed metal, maybe to keep it from re-rusting.

did you use rust proofing paint? did you paint the under side of the truck as well. i would just to keep it from rusting back.

Yup, that's exactly why I painted it. I did the under side too and all of it was done with rust-proof paint, but I don't think I'm winning the battle against the rust. I don't think there is one piece of the truck that doesn't have some rust on it. That's ok though, I just need it to last until I get my degree and then I am going to do a frame up resto/rod on it. I can't wait!

Thanks for the compliments guys, I appreciate it.

Today I started by installing the new weather stripping around the door openings and then I cut a hole in the dash to accomodate the cd player. The body of the old radio was about the same size as the cd player, but the face of it was quite a bit smaller.

I taped out where it needed to be cut

and then laid into it with the dremmel.

Someone on here suggested that I mount my amp on a piece of plywood to keep it that much further away from moisture, so I cut out a piece

and painted it flat black to blend in with the new carpet I bought.

I did all the in dash wiring with the help of this:

and this:

and spliced into the interior light wire for the constant power supply to the deck. The smallest fuse I could find (that came with one of the in-line fuse holders) was a 20amp. Is that small enough, or should I switch it out with a smaller one??? You can see the fuse in the bottom left corner of this pic.

I installed the 5.25's in the boxes that I made

and the sub into the pre-fabed box I bought, and started wiring things up for a test. I ended up with a mangled mess of wire, but it actually made music!!! It was so rewarding to finally see and hear some obvious progress.

those are some nice little boxes. are those just for imaging or are you going to keep them in the truck?
I'm going to be keeping them in the truck. I would love to get some kick enclosures, but I couldn't argue with $3. They are going to be mounted under the dash following the same angle as the dash, and they fit pretty well considering how huge they are.

Understandable. Im sure when you have the funds you will change things since you plan on doing a full resto.
