Equalizer questions!! PLEAS HELP :'(

I need some help. I'm new to the equalizer game and was wondering how they worked. I'm trying to run my iPod or laptop in my dorm room on a car setup, meaning car amps and speakers, and an equalizer. Can I do this? Actually I think I know I can. With PSUs. But how would I wire the sub amp and the mids/highs amp?

Basically wondering if I could wire all this up through an equalizer cuz I know some of them have auxiliary inputs. Is it possible?

Answer the bet you can, I'll answer any questions you have. Just wanna figure this out really bad. PLEASE HELP!!!

yep, you can. you can just find an EQ that includes a volume control. then add a switch for power on (both battery and remote turn-on).

but you will waste a lot of money and time doing this. it is asked a lot because people have amps laying around. the price for the PSU's is hundreds of dollars - since they need to source high amperage. a 12VDC 40A PSU is around $100.

buy a used receiver instead of the amps on PSU's. $20-40 can fetch you a receiver. then pick up a passive crossover (200Hz 12dB/oct) works fine for subs/speakers. I know this because i've been running car subs and car speakers of home receivers for almost 15 years. it's cheaper for me to buy a used receiver than for me to build my own PSU. I also use plate amplifiers to run subs - which is ideal since they include flexible inputs (high and low level), they auto turn-on, and have adjustable crossover and level.

booya. a $130 sound system that will rival anything you could build with your car audio gear and PSU's. the limiting factor will always be the PSU.

But what if I already have all the speakers (sa-8 v2, and 4 kicker 6 1/2s) layin around and have amps for them? And no car to put em in. I wanna put this stuff to good use. Lol almost brand new all of it.

@CodyHendo; it just sucks because the limiting factor is that car audio amps are made to run off of 14v and home audio off of 120v.

yep. not saying you can't use the car speakers and subs, but you do need to make enclosures for them (and do a good job at it). Once they are in boxes, you still need an amp AND a preamp. The receiver is just the logical choice and you will do just fine.

With my Pioneer SX-203 (got in HS as a xmas gift) I've powered four 12" subs (2 ohm stereo) and component sets (2 ohm stereo) wired through passive crossovers. All it required was a fan to keep the amp cool. In the early 90's that receiver was only $100. and it still works today, and it still powers a pair of 12's and car speakers in my garage (and shakes the walls).
