EQ'ing questions/problems

I had a problem with my speakers getting all the bass in my 94 explorer, anyways, long story short, I took my car to circuit city to have them look at it (oh no, not circuit city!!) they seem to think that my HU has no crossover feature or anything to take the bass away from the speakers and put it to my sub. Can this be true? Its a pioneer premier deh-p460mp, and it seems sort of retarded for it to have this problem. Ive never heard of people having this problem. They think I need either a better HU, or seperate a amp for my speakers (w/ a corssover). How come everyone I know has cheapo HU, and yet they dont have this problem? I can barely turn it up past 15 until my speakers start crackling from bass and volume.

an amp and speakers would definetly be better, and most amps have a high pass/lowpass crossover built in anymore, if your hu doesn't have one. Another option would be a higher end HU that does have a crossover in it, and has more power. I like the deh 8600 alot (pioneer) or premier deh-860, both have an eq, and crossover and a lot of power. You can usually find they on ebay new for around $300.

What is the feature I should be looking for exactly? My HU has EQ, balancing, fading, but nothing that takes the bass from the speakers, you know? Which sounds sort of retarded to me.

You need something that has built in crossover features, like the alpine 9835, eclipse 8053, or as said above the 8600 and 860. All have built in cross overs. Look for a "3-way crossover" Controls hi, mids, lows. Don't need much more then that ;P. EQ is just to tweak the response to make it flat(or close to it) balancing is just left right, fade is rear and front which none of those have to do with cross overs :p.

actually someone said above, a really really cheap way to go too, is you can put those bass blockers on your speakers. My first system I bought had them, when I knew nothing about car audio and they kept bass away from the 4" mids I had and only bass came out of my 6x9's.

alright, I'll try the bass blockers first.

Can I put these on the wiring harness directly from the HU, or will I need to open my door panels?

BTW, my HU has a 3-way EQ, thats adjusts the EQ for eberything though.

Noob of the year award.
goes to.. *DRUM ROLL PLEASE*

FANNNCYYYYYNAPPPKIN!
lol, alright man, you come down here and try to analyze the problem. Its not an easy thing when you have two identicle cars and they have completely different sounds, youd be puzzled to.

Anyways, if it makes sleep better, you are a better than I am, okay?

As a whole though, my last few threads have started a commotion. Nothing wrong with getting things heated up around here.

umm, why don't u turn the bass down with the EQ on the HU? if u can try lowering 60-80 hz frequencies using the EQ... i would if i had too much bass coming from my speakers..
The eq on the lower end pioneers is usually just a multi-position loudness/tone control not a true freq. specific eq. A HU crossover is what you need. Set your fronts @ 80hz, bandpass the rear fill @120hz or so, and let the subs have everything below 63hz or so. If your speakers can handle it (it sounds like they can't )you may be able to run them lower, but the lower freq you run them, the more power they will need to perform.
