EQ before or after the amp

i am hooking up a EQ and i need to know whether i wire it in between the deck and my amp or after my amp.. i tryed to hook it up between the deck and the amp and my deck got really hot..

Well...

You CAN"T hook it up after the amp. Are you sure you had it connected the correct way? H/U output goes to EQ input. EQ output goes to amp input.

i think i hooked it up right. Its a Clarion and i don't have a book on it or anything i have never hooked a EQ up before though... it so confusing not knowing where all the wires go.. i know where the speaker wires go and the power and ground... after that i dunno.
