Elemental Designs A-Series Sub.

it all makes sense if you look at the physics of it, where Power = I^2 *R (power=current squared, times resistance) if you are pushing the amp at 1 ohm, then you are going to need more current to get an output which is at or exceeding the power rating at 2 ohms

i imagine the rating they gave was at 2 ohms..

correct, playing music it will not draw a constant 170 amps, not even close.. if it did it would fry up after probably like 5 minutes because of excessive heat. But yeah it is going to draw more current at 1 ohm than at 2 ohms, its just physics. I dont know that much about amplifiers though but just using simple equations its pretty obvious. and it makes sense that it would be tested to pull around 160-170 amps at 1 ohm and then be benched by the company to pull 114 if it were at 2 ohms. I'm not positive but usually when i see its specs and all that they dont list its power at 1 ohm, which means maybe they didnt really intend on having people run it at 1 ohm but since it will normally hold up ok maybe they decided to let people run it like that.. who knows..

ok, i concede on the 170 amp statement, but i still maintain taht it wont draw that constntly and AS such he should be pretty ok with his electrical system... unless its sruggling already...

either way...

playing MUSIC... you iwll not have an avergae current draw of 170 amps, correct?

shouldn't kill an alternator... (any in decent shape anyways....)
It is always safe to have a larger alt though....
