wow, ive seen some ugly subs but this wins. I mean, physically it looks well made, but its just not what you'd call "appealing" to the average joe. Or bob, or ... well anyone.

But hey, im sure it will do ok if you like seriously low surface area and goofy sized surrounds.

Other than being a 13 inch driver and the basket, what W7 technology did it copy? Keep in mind that when this thing first appeared as a prototype it did not have a W7 basket, yet the comparison was stil made.

Say what you will, when I saw the first pics of the proto and its basket, my first thought was "W7 look-a-like". Im not the one who created the thread saying this same thing, nor was I the only one to say they felt that way. Did it have a W7 frame? No, it had a strikingly similar looking frame... that low and behold, had patented W7 (JL) tech in it.

I dont even know what your arguement is.... that it didn't LOOK like a W7? That's fine, everyone has an opinion. Im sure some people even believe eD would never stoop so low as to try and steal the design, any design. Im not going to waste any sleep over you chosing not to believe the handwriting on the wall: it was a bold-faced attempt at copying a competitor's design, that they stupidly made look too similar which brought the attention of JL down on them. It is MY opinion that any other jibber jabber is just an attempt to steer attention elsewhere. You are trying to somehow blame the people who actually noticed a similarity in the basket... even though we were right. Your arguement is fundamentally flawed.

I don't think there was an "original" argument to this. I think it was clear to everyone that things were 'fixed' when the patent holders questioned the design. It was at that point when the design changed.

I just meant that at some point Audioholic felt that I was trying to argue with him. I don't know how that happend. I'm going to stop posting in this thread after this becasue I'm tired of the topic but I still don't think the Av proto looked at all like the JL. Just my opinion I guess. What I was saying is that even before the W7 similarities popped up people were comparing it to the W7 and I don't think it was justified. This driver is in no way like a JL W7.

Now that I see what this thread is stemming from, I have to say that I don't see what all the fuss is about. You'd have to totally stupid to believe ED product looks anything like a w7 though it may appear somewhat similar, but no way in he!! like ED pulled some shady sh!t and tried to copy w7's so called " patented design ".

And since the subject is about " copying " I can think of more than few sub company's that there product could be confused with another sub company's product.

RE's 02-05 RE, SE, SX series

Fi Audio - BTL, BL, Q series

All the mentioned subs have similar looking baskets and motors, First time I saw a Fi Audio sub I thought I was looking at a older RE subwoofer.

Another thing, what the he!! does the " look " of the subwoofer have anything to do with the function of it, only time you ever see the d@mn thing is when you take it out of the box and install in the enclosure.

A subwoofer could have the ugliest looking appearance in the world and perform and sound like nothing ever heard before, would it preclude you from buying it because it looks " butt ugly ", I highly doubt it.

I have no proclivity towards ED, JL, RE, Fi, DD, ID or any other subwoofer company with regards to what their product looks like, yeah, the baskets on some or all of the subwoofers look nice and some don't, so what, as long as it does what it's designed to do and function to perform in the manner it should, who gives a sh!t!!!//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/tongue.gif.6130eb82179565f6db8d26d6001dcd24.gif

Phil,

The primary difference is that in the case of Adire, RE Audio, and Fi they used open and non-proprietary tooling and parts. In the case of eD and JL Audio, some of the parts in question (the basket) are very similar in both form and function involving a patented design (not "so called" patented). There is nothing wrong with copying another company in some respects...it's the most sincere form of flattery. But when you copy or near-copy a patented part or product, you are taking considerable risks.

Again, I say if eD had nothing to worry about, they would not have changed the basket. Mind you, they may still have something to worry about as they sent out the prototype with the potentially infringing basket out to customers for early reviews...not a smart move on their part.
