Dude had one VC wired, should I buy?

I was looking at a pair MB Quart 15" RWE-354's a quy was selling locally. The install shop seems to have wired them as SVC, there should have been a bus bar installed when using a single wire to each speaker. Should I avoid the speakers, or test as DVC and buy if they hit good?

when ou say wired as SVC, do you mean that there were only 2 wires(1pos,1neg) going from the amp to the box?

if so the 2 subs were wired together to acheive 1 load on the amp at w/e impedance.

he could mean they only ran wire to one of the coils on each sub
an audio shop should know very well not to run only one voice coil.

if the subs are still in the enclosure ask them if they could take one of them out. that way you could see how the wiring job is.

if they only had 1 voice coil wired i wouldn't bother with them.

I agree, but there was only one wire (1 pos and 1 neg) running to the 4 posts.

There was no bus bar, in fact the bus bars were in the cardboard boxes. The

dude said they were wired for 4 ohms each and the speakers are dual 4 each.

To me that means the only valid configs are 2 or 8 ohms.

So, test them and see if they hit, or leave them alone even if they work when

properly wired.

Thanks for the responses by the way!

Look at the subs in person. Bring a DMM. If the coils read just below 4 ohms, then they're fine.

Running one coil will not hurt the subwoofer at all unless that one coil is being fed too much power.

Indeed, there is nothing wrong or damaging with only running a single coil of a DVC sub.
is that right? //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/confused.gif.e820e0216602db4765798ac39d28caa9.gif

i always expected it would be. ive never done so myself , but hmm...

Thanks everyone. Yes he got ripped by Cartoys in DFW. They also sold him a 1/2" MDF

sealed box with shared airspace for $300.00; he's throwing it in.

Yes, that's right.

In fact many people, primarily in home audio, intentionally use only one coil to manipulate the Q of the driver. You can either leave the other coil open or use a resistor or potentiometer to further manipulate the Q.

The Ascendant Audio Atlas exploited this.

so say for example , a dvc sub rated for x amount of power. if only one vc is used , would power handling be cut in half?

Theoretically, yes.

But supposedly the other voice coil helps by acting as a heat sink for the operating coil, and as such the power handling is only reduce by about 25%.
