The addition of a rear chamber has been done to a number of home audio tweeters and can vastly affect the response of it. The rear chamber or enclosure is very small but is probably proportionate to the driver size. do they need one? No. has it been done or is it possible? Yes. In your application i would not even consider it but it does exsist and has been done guys.

Ribbons tend to need airspace, as I read somewhere. (Raven ribbons).

Some dome tweets seem to have their own chamber built into the tweet housing itself.
