Do they even make good amps anymore?

If you've been around other audio enthusiasts as long as you claim to have been listening to "very good" stereos, you know fully well how passionate people can be about their equipment. You seem to be implying that manufacturers and dealers are paying for good reviews. Sometimes there are samples sent around for review, and obviously those create bias, but when many, many reviews say the same praise you have to start believing something is genuine, right?
If the reviews are corrupt, why not look at test bench measurements? They're still done today. PASMag.com posts such measurements with every review, so you can skip over the print and go right to the data if you want.
Thanks! I didn't mean to imply that "all" reviews were biased. I've had a bad experience or two lately with going by what "he said/she said". One instance is I bought a Hifonics ZRX1200.2 amplifier to push two PIONEER TS-W260D4 DUAL 4 OHM 10" CHAMPION SERIES 350W RMS speakers, and I'm not satisfied at all. The amplifier overheats after about 1 hour of pushing it (wired in 4 ohm per channel), and I can't even hear the subwoofers very well at all. I had it professionally installed because I don't have the time or tools to do it myself. I'm thinking some of the lack of bass has to do with my wife's car having leather seats in the back (which will muffle a lot of the bass), and the box I have is to spec, although it could be better. What do you suggest for making what I currently have sound like it's supposed to?

Also CEA compliant means nothing. The amps you see winning the big awards are not CEA compliant. The ones you see that are are from a brand that may have one amp that passes its weak criteria
This is good to know. That's why the current CEA compliancy rules cannot be trusted solely, in my opinion. It wasn't always like that. That's why I'm here.

By the way, not only do I want to make my wife's car sound as good as my Explorer, but I also have to buy a setup for my daughter's car. She's not really a bass head like me, but she told me the other day that she wants one like the one our family ride (Explorer), lol. Who knew? I already got the front 4 speakers for her car to get started.

My wife's car has a 4-channel Alpine 45 WPC amp for the front 4 speakers. She doesn't like it loud, just full. I have noticed that when she's in the Explorer I can hear her a couple of blocks away. I think she's just joshing me, lol.

Really?? I was hoping for a little more info. Take my word for it..., I've been listening to stereos (and very good ones) for more years than most of y'all have been alive, lol! Most of the stereos I hear now wouldn't hold a candle to the "cheap" one I have. Even the stereo install experts, and some that have even built competition systems, compliment me when they hear mine. Some are even baffled a little, lol. I would challenge anybody to find a stereo that sounds any "better" than the one I have in my Explorer. Notice I didn't say "louder", just "better". Both the amps are class A amps with THDs of less than .02, and the amps are CEA compliant (pre 2006), an Alpine 4-channel (65 WPC into 4 ohms) & a Sony Xplod (2-channel @ 200 WPC into 4 ohms, before the days of the "junk" I've seen on the market the last few years). I think it says a LOT that these amps are still in use for 14+ years now, and they have NEVER overheated or clipped driving them hard for hours on end.
I do read the specs on everything, but there seems to be no uniformity to them. Some are CEA compliant, some are not. I've read reviews, and afterwards thought "who's paying these people to say what they're saying?" after actually listening to them. I just want honest answers. I may know "nothing" about stereos, but I do know what sounds good to me. Crystal clear sound all the way through the spectrum from 20 Hz to 20 kHz is what I like. Needless to say, they don't exactly make them like they used to.

I know they use different standards today than they used to, and that's why I'm having trouble get the best bang for the buck.
whats your budget on everything

I'd just define exactly what you want there's a lot of nice equipment out there for a decent price. Plenty of people here are willing to help you find some stuff. Just be specific about the size of speakers ohms brand sound you're looking for and we'd be more than happy to help you find something.

I would however stay away from saying your gear smokes most peoples gear for SQ you have no idea how much some of these guys spent on their SQ builds. This isn't some neighborhood forum where guys are buying their crap off of craigslist or best buy. I just spent a couple of grand upgrading all my gear from an average guy install running about 800rms that sounded ok for me. Even the new stuff I have getting ready to go in which is pretty good is nothing compared to what a lot of people here are running.

Can you give me some insight to why these amps would not be CEA compliant? Do they just not bother with it because it is sort of laughed at in the big leagues? Or what?
Exactly. It's only a sticker and they don't need it. Tru, audison, all the Korean amps. None have it because they don't need it for people to buy them.

Okay. Sorry if I came off that way. I'm not trying to step on any toes. I was just responding to some of the others that were laughing, or not taking me seriously. I've seen many so-called systems in many different cars that get much louder than mine, and are much more expensive, but don't have near the SQ as the one I'm trying to duplicate. I am an older, married man, with two teenagers, and didn't even marry until my mid-30s, so..., yes I spent a lot of money when it was just me. I love CLEAN sound with tight bass that you can feel. I've always preferred 12" woofers to 15s because of their quicker bass response, and to 10s because of depth. I know my budget won't allow me to match some of the systems the pros on here have, but let's start at about $600 total for my daughter's car, and I can spend a little more on my wife's car if somebody can point me in the right direction as to what I need to do.

By you saying 10s don't have depth you truly have no idea. And how did you wire a dual 4 to 4?

You can't wire a dual 4ohm to 4 ohm per channel unless you bridged the amp.

You could be onto something there. The 10s do go down to 20 Hz according to spec. Maybe I meant the SPL value. And the speakers may be wired wrong because I only used one voice coil. Would that make it something other than 4 ohm? Also, why would the amp shut down when I can barely get any bass?

Yes there are a VAST number of excellent amplifiers out there. Sounds like you're in the market for a 5 channel amplifier based on your 4 speakers plus sub setup. What's the budget your working with?

Here are several amplifiers that will get the job done for a lower price point:

Arc XDi805 (lower output on the sub channel, so you'd need efficient subs for this one)

PPI P900.5 (70x4 + 440x1)

Kenwood XR900-5 (60x4 + 400x1)

And a couple a little bit more money, but better:

JL Audio XD700/5 (75x4 + 300x1)

Alpine PDX-V9 (100x4 + 500x1)

Arc XDi850.5 (85x4 + 400x1)

Soundstream REF5.1000 (95x4 + 460x1) class AB

You can't wire a dual 4ohm to 4 ohm per channel unless you bridged the amp.

OR unless you only wire one coil............
