Do I need an eq?

Hey guys, I currently have an alpine cda-105 and it has both high and low pass cross overs and a bunch of different set points. I also have a clarion eqs746 eq to tighten it up. A shop I went to recently and a couple of car audio vets told me my deck is all I need and the eq is overkill. What do you guys think? Thanks in advance for all your help!

I like to use my eq to lower my peaks. I'm running active so i dont have crossovers attenuating anything so the eq does that. Not familiar with your headunit but if everything set flat doesn't please you then try using an eq. I'd say use the eq for attenuating and not for boosting and you'll be safe.

Well he's right, Sweet Baby Rays is good sauce.//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/laugh.gif.48439b2acf2cfca21620f01e7f77d1e4.gif
Oh....see I had put in my own punctuation when I read it and got "Sweet, baby rays the best, sauce!" >.>

Now...try and explain "Q it up fronty!" Go on, I dare ya.

I saw the barbecue in 05fronty's avatar. Sweet Baby Rays is the name of the sauce. Qing is slang for barbecue. Sorry for the poor punctuation and off topic idle chit chat.

Im not familiar with your specific deck, and Im too lazy too look up its specs, but your external EQ is only overkill if your deck already has a nice built-in EQ. Otherwise, its crazy to say an EQ is overkill in a car audio system. Even with a nearly flawless install, sound deadening, and top quality equipment, you will never be able to eliminate the sound wave interferences from things like reflections off glass, absorption from soft fabrics and seat cushions, different path lengths, etc. Lets face it, for sound reproduction, a car interior sucks ass. You can improve some/a lot of it with sound deadener, kick panels, etc... but you will never remove all the issues the environment creates. For this reason, a quality EQ will (almost) always be a benefit to a car stereo system. That is assuming, of course, that it is installed and adjusted properly.

Add to that the fact that most people like to tailor the music to their own personal tastes and moods, and an EQ becomes a very important piece of your system. Id question the quality of the experience of any 'veteran' who claims an EQ is overkill.

Lol I knew it made sense somehow. But like audioholic said, rarely is an EQ overkill.

I'm not a big fan of the Clarion. I had one and it was just Ok. It did make music sound a little better. I don't like Soundstream eq's either. I like the Kicker KQ5 and KQ9. They cost more, but sound way better than the Clarion and my pxa-h100. I have the KQ9 and every time you adjust a band you can really hear a big difference in the frequency you're boosting or cutting. You can do it with cheaper eq's, but the Kicker seems louder and cleaner. Eq's are not overkill. You can't believe that so called car audio vet! I have an Audiocontrol EQX also, and the Kicker seems to be on the same level IMO. I like the Kenwood KGC-4042A, it might surprise you?

I think Kicker stopped making the KQ9 (graphic), but the KQ5 (parametric) is on Ebay? I did hide the hanging wires.
