Dirtbike Riders I need your opinions...

I have a friend who is trying to sell a 1987 XR250, the bike runs really strong, has brand new michelin tires on the front and rear and overall is a pretty decent bike to be 22 years old, well he has a kid on the way and told me he wanted 700 for it and I told him he was out of his **** mind then I got him to 500 and by last night he was at 350 cash. The bike is going to need new graphics, a baffle for the exhaust because it's pretty loud and it needs the guard for the chain because it is loose, and it's also going to need brakes and a clutch lever. I can post pics later when I get time but I wanted to see what you guys thought it was worth. It'a not the prettiest thing in the world but it runs great, im not sure I can handle it because I can't ride one well and I was going to try and resell it and make $100 bucks if I could. Honestly I think it's worth $200 bucks tops but he is also strung out on crack and keeps saying a guy is bringing him $500 in cash hoping i'll jump to it and he can hit a lick off me but I am smarter than that. So any input or advice would be great guys and sorry for the long post lol.

Here are some pics:

I wouldn't buy it. It's too old to be lasting much longer, especially if it wasn't thoroughly maintained and by the sounds of it it wasn't.

However your biggest problem is the fact that since it's so old you'll have no where to get parts for it. I mean last I checked the Honda shops don't carry parts for bikes that were made in the 80's. And I can almost guarantee you'll need parts for it within the first month (depending on how much you ride of course). Save your money and if you really want a cheap bike go buy a 4-9 year old 2 stroke for cheap. You should be able to find one for about a grand. Or just get a pit bike to tool around on for a few hundred

I've been racing for 14 years incase you were wondering if I actually ride

Alot of good points thanks, but I rode it and it stood up on me thru first and second and ran strong as an ox and i've been told some of the older ones are better than the new ones, I was able to find the few things I needed on ebay and I know a guy who owns a local bike shop who is been in the dirtbike scene for over 30 years and I know he can help me find parts. But if I could get it for $200 and put $100 in it then I would have a fairly good bike to ride for $300-$400 bucks right?

I sounds like it is worth $500-800 all day, even if it need a little TLC. but if you want a good bike to ride get a 2001 and up model
It may be worth $400 but that's the absolute top dollar, there is no way i'd give more than $300 myself. I dont need a title for a dirtbike do I? Because im sure he doesn't have it.

I'm here to tell you that's not true. Now I'm not going to say that an 88' wasn't better than the 89' but there is no way that bike competes with anything within the last decade. Have you rode any other dirtbikes? I'm not going to deny it has a strong motor and that it runs decent, but why dump money into something that old and outdated? You could shell out a little more money and grab you a bike that will be fun to ride and easier to maintain

In the end it's all about you though and if you feel like you getting your monies worth then go for it. I just think you should atleast look at your other options. I flatout GAVE an 1996 xr100 to a friend of ours, and yours is a 250 from the 80's.

I would say $200 depending on condition

Your words were the exact same that came out of my brother in laws mouth, he always tells me to listen to my elders and I have finally learned to do that lol, he said it was old outdated and not worth more than 200 but it was worth fixin because it does run strong just needs a little work, posting pics in a few tell me what you think because you seem to know what your talking about and I appreciate your time helpin me out man. I just want somethin to ride around on and goof off with, not really concerned about the appearance just want it to run good.

EDIT: seen the pics now, only 1 of them works for me

Well here's the scoop, those old xr's do last a while but the start to develope problems as any older bike would. You'll start getting into all the bearings (which aren't cheap even if you do manage to find them), chains and sprockets (good luck finding a countershaft sprocket for that bike), chain guide and other little misc. parts depending on how it was taken care of. Be sure you can find air filters and oil filters for that beast as that's a HUGE part in maintaining a bike.

If you just plan on doing a little trail riding and don't care about appearances I would say go for it. You've got a friend who works at a shop so he can help you clean it up (motor wise) and ya'll can give it a quick run through and re-grease everything. You might want to go ahead and bleed the brakes as I'm willing to bet there's air in the lines by now. Be sure to go ahead and clean the airboot and gas tank, dirt always seems to find it's way into the gayest places and you definatley need to make sure your airboot is clean as that's an open shot into your carb for dirt to just enter into your motor. Basically your going to need to show it some love

How's the suspension? Haha gotta love the Sunoco sticker on the side plate

Thanks for all your help man you made me realize I need to definately check on these things first about maintaing it. It has a diff swing arm on it too lol. Oh well I am gonna give him another day or 2 because nobody in my town has money and he is gonna be dying to get rid of it so I may ride off with it for $200 or less

And as far as the suspension its pretty good, he has a 77 model xr 100 that you have to roll off and it will go thru 1st and 2nd then it cuts off, I think the carb needs cleaned and a plug but he said 20 bucks and I could have it. May pick it up to tinker around with it too.

No worries bro, and like I said take your time to look around. You'll be suprised what you can get for $400-500. That'll get you outta the whole riding in the field and creek business and into the bikes that you can go hit some jumps with and haul some *** on. Nothing wrong with trail riding though, that's how I started out and I had tons of fun. Just be sure to get you some good gear

Yeah the mis-matched swingarm kind of throws me off a bit. Do you know what bike the swingarm is supposed to go on? Doesn't really matter though so long as it fits like it's supposed to. I just don't want you to inherit someonelse's problem bike

Edit: seen all the pics now. Not to sure if I would buy that based on outside appearances. I'm assuming he never washes it muchless put time into maintaining the motor? Man that shits just old really, I would just say look elsewhere to be honest. Like I said though it's all about you, if you like it and you think it's worth it go for it.

It was put on by the previous owner who works for a living he just didnt want the bike anymore so I think it's ok, and as far as spendin more money I really dont have it I just want this to ride around my yard, they scare the hell out of me I hate to sound like a ***** but I can ride a street bike way better than one of these things lol.

haha it's all good dude, I'm a ***** when it comes to street bikes.

Man from what your telling me it seems like this would be a good bike for you to just put around on if that's all you want it to be. I guarantee you though you'll be wanting more eventually;)

If you really feel like getting it then do it, just be sure to do the work I told you about and it'll last much longer than just running it into the ground.
