Dilema: Subs losing power as bass hits, keeps playing and comes back periodically.

I Drive a '96 Corsica, I just bought a new Pyle PLA2200 2-Channel 1400-Watt Bridgeable Mosfet Amplifier. I have a 1400-watt (peak) Boss CX122D 12" Subwoofer 4ohm Voice Coils. I also have (an unknown wattage) JL 12W04? 12" Subwoofer. My Head-Unit is a Virtual Reality Sound Labs Model: VRCD400-SDU.

Currently all of these are hooked up in my car. And it currently has a problem. I'm guessing it's a loose wire or a voltage drop from the problem I'm having: Bass notes start strong and then drop power, But comes back after a moment of silence (on the bass channel.)

Basically, the subs hit, sound as if they lose power, still playing, but at a lower volume, come back to hit hard then go back low again.

Turned gain down to nearly half of what it was. No loss of power now, can turn my HU all the way up to its max volume and still no distortion.

WELL, now that Im considering doing the big 3, and know the wattage of my JL Speaker, I'm scared to even turn my stereo on now that I realized I've been trusting a 300-Watt JL 12W0-4 to keep up with a 12 inch 1400 Watt Boss sub.

I tried running just the one speaker and I can't hang. The Difference between one subwoofer and two seems detrimental to me. If it comes to a choice between hoping the JL won't blow and choosing to run the boss by itself, I'll let the JL Blow before I even talk about putting the Boss back in it's own box.

As well as, at the same time I'm curious as to why the JL hasn't blown -YET-, I'm more than positive I've overpowered the JL speaker, a 1400 watt amp in bridged mode powering a 1400 watt speaker and my JL 300 watt for about three weeks. I just started noticing the voltage drop problem only a week and a half ago. I know eCrack said: "Use one type of speaker" but, Why when these speakers have been working for almost a month would I deviate from using a speaker that I know works?

Boss and Pyle are grossly overrated. If you want two subs, buy two EQUAL subs. you need an equal load on the amp if you want two subs to not cancel. with two different subs you have two different loads which react differently with the amplifier. next, verify sub impedance and amplifier minimum impedance. Sub placement strongly dictates performance. trunks cause destructive interference - which is cancellation of bass frequencies.

sell whichever you don't want to keep and buy another like the one you do keep.

what is the impedance load on the amp? what model # subs and amp?

music is dynamic - you'll NEVER see 1400W from that boss amp. You'll be lucky to see 400W RMS out of it, which the JL sub can handle with dynamic music.

what size power wire did you use? how/where did you ground the amp? did you use good quality ring terminals and bolts to secure wiring?

Clipping blows subs. Google "amplifier clipping" and make sure you understand proper gain setting. Gain setting can be learned here:

pics of your install will help us trouble shoot for you. my build log is linked in my sig if you want ideas on good connections and wiring methods.

The woofer that I'm going to keep is the Boss CX122D 12" Subwoofer 4ohm Voice Coils, My amp is: Pyle PLA2200 2-Channel 1400-Watt Bridgeable Mosfet Amplifier.

I did use a good quality ring terminal with a bolt for the amp's ground: which is in the trunk (the ground for the trunk light(is no longer in operation)) which I ground down to Nice shiny metal. My ground wire is only 8ga. Power wire is 1ga.

I'll take pictures asap. Will be using Photobucket to upload them. I actually looked over your build log, and thought to myself that I'm in wayyyy over my head. LOL

Btw my speaker box/amp are in my trunk.

You need to start all over. You will never get anywhere close to rating or a decent system using that equipment. The second thing is you NEVER want to use a ground smaller than your power, if anything make your ground larger. The best thing for you to do right now is sell the Boss and Pyle on CL, buy yourself another JL, buy a decent amp to power the 2 JL's, and learn how to wire on here. Those two JL's on a decent amp with a decent install will do much better than the Pyle and Boss garbage.

Just my .2 though..

Really, I appreciate the feedback guys, I'll be doing big 3 today. Taking the JL outa the mixture for now. but in the long run, I'll be getting either another JL or a set of 1000-watt RMS Audiobahn woofers. Once I get a job, I'll be capable of getting new stuff. But until then, baby steps are all I can take.

JL is much better than Audiobahn so that would be your best bet.

Why don't you just give people your budget and get a real system? It almost pisses me off when I hear of people running Boss and Pyle. WHO IN THE THEIR RIGHT MIND WOULD BUY ANYTHING BOSS OR PYLE?
