difference between amp and sub clipping?

Not really. I genuinely wasn't following where that one was leading. Could have been voltage or current since either, in regards to an AC signal, would be the standard.
Someone should really make a sticky explaining RMS because it's one of those things people like to tack onto things that really just spreads misinformation and ignorance.
No it was quite obvious he was talking about power.

Use of RMS explained:rms and peak

Pretty much unless you're reading an osciloscope or an engineer, every voltage, current, and power figure you'll deal with as far as AC goes will be the RMS value. When people talk about 110V or 220V lines in the home they never say RMS (though that is an RMS figure). I haven't seen a home appliance that needs to put RMS after the power consumption.

I probably did fvck up that formula, it was about 3:30am when I threw that out. I'll stand behind everything else there though.
I understand AC and Power Consumptions

Make a thread and have it sticky!

I thought so to.

This is the original phrase

If the amp is to match the head unit why do people recommend sqrt(rms*ohms)

That made no sense at 3:30am and it doesn't make much more now, though the fact that some claim that everyone should know that RMS is synonymous with power really proves my point that there's just way too many unfinformed people slinging around too much horse ****.

But you refer to "power" as "RMS" and to "impedence" as "ohms"?

This thread is going nowhere...

The problem with this is, that not all amps label the gain, like my amp. All it says is 9v and 0.2v and nothing in between. There is no way to tell when you are on 5v or not, you could be clipping or you could go higher. I just don't see the point when a DMM is much more effective.

I wish you would explain how YOU set your gains step by step
He probably refers to frequency as Hz's too. Most people don't understand math.

Seriously though, you should make a thread.
I'd do that, I'm not gonna go on a car forum and be a smart ass when my electrical knowledge is based on home electrical. If certain terms are used on most car audio forum, I'd used it, who am I to argue and try to correct people, that's where the 'expert' like you or @hispls comes in.

My initial question was if the amp gain is to match the head-unit output, why do people recommend "E=SQRT(WRMS*Z)", I'm not here to start a flame or to be a troll.

riight, whaddya tell a noob, er noobish question...."hey dude, clamp it, tone it, dimm it and formulate it???? WTF??

this is true. you can assume linear, but without an accurate scale setting gain by dial is inaccurate as well.

good amps don't have this problem though. good amps are well labeled. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

good point..lol... the OP sensed clipping and without knowledge of HU, amp, sub, enclosure, tuning, etc., It is difficult to try to advise...and yes, I was trying to be conservative in my wording. Gain setting has always been a touchy subject with a lot of folks with so many variables involved.

A Digital Multi Meter is a very useful tool. But, it also multiplies the variables involved..enclosure tuning, impedance load, tone frequency, etc. Without knowing the amp make and model, how can one person advise another to use stated power ratings to measure the voltage at the amps' outputs and adjust gain accordingly?..what if it does considerably more or less than rated at said impedance? speaking of which, sub(s) hooked up or no?...if not, you would have to create a dummy load to match driver impedance on most manufacturers' amps to even get a accurate reading....

Next step is finding out how many of your favorite songs are clipped //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crap.gif.7f4dd41e3e9b23fbd170a1ee6f65cecc.gif

I recently found out about this and I think it's a pretty good quick explanation: A tutorial on gain setting and amplifier power usageThe best educational source I've seen, covering a lot of topics pertaining to car audio is this video:

Everyone on that thread says that setting the gains by ear is the best way, but on this forum, everyone says you should do it by DMM or Oscope or DD-1.

I is confused, my setup sounds pretty effin good. I just feel like I might have set my gains wrong. I used a DMM.
