Making my first box. Using a simple square design. Can't decide between MDF and plywood. I have to buy the MDF but I have plywood on hand. If I use the plywood, what bracing do I need? Any other other ideas?
How thick is your plywood? I'm not a fan of kicker, to say the least. With a sub that costs less than $50, it won't really make a difference if you use MDF or decent plywood. You also shouldn't need bracing if your edges are reasonably secure. Especially with a sealed box, you should be fine with plywood. Make sure its at least half an inch thick though. Plywood will probably split, so be sure to pre-drill all holes
Plywood is 3/4". Planned on using my Kreg tool and glue for the joints. Can I get by with 1/2" for the weight savings? Not looking to win any contests, just fill out the music.
1/2 inch plywood would be difficult, especially for your first box. I'm not sure why you want to save weight, but it will be about 35% lighter if you go 1/2 instead of 3/4 inch. I used 1/2 inch MDF on a dual 4" speaker box one time and it wasn't fun. 3/4 inch MDF is much easier to work with.
