used the birch on my type R box, loved it, could carry a 4 12" box myself lol..For those of you who intend to build a bigger box, make sure to use plywood instead of MDF. Everyone thinks MDF is the way to go because of its density.
Wrong.
By itself, MDF has very little structural strength, and it is strength you need when dealing with the stresses caused by high output subs. Standard Birch plywood is fairly cheap and half the weight of MDF, yet is *so much stronger* its crazy. A good combination to use (to keep your costs down) would be 1/2 Birch and 1/2 Fir. If you want to finish your box with paint or something like that, then use a thin layer of MDF, which is what it is good for.
