Alright. I want to deaden basically the whole car under the carpet, doors, roof, trunk etc. I was searching around and saw this thread:

http://www.caraudio.com/forum/showthread.php?t=18532&highlight=flexing+cars

Basically I love feeling the vibrations inside also. I want to keep as much pressure on the inside as possible. Does the deadener keep all the sound / bass in the vehicle as possible? So I will still feel the vibrations on the inside and they will be even more improved by the deadener? Overkill = a good thing? I've never used deadener before.

That is exactly correct. Deadner keeps all of the sound IN the vehicle. It will not stop you from feeling it, trust me, i felt a big difference after but I was dissapointed in other areas. . .

My deadner experiance took 53 hours and I added:

144 sq. ft of second skin damp. pro

3 gallons of Second Skin Sludge

3 sheets of overkill

1 sheet of heatwave

When I first started I wanted to kill Road Noise. . . after all i added I realized this is a fantasy. It will make a small difference but if your doing the deadening for road nosie alone. . . don't do it- you'll regret it.

However when I did do it i noticed a huge acoustical difference; everything is so much clearer, bass makes me happier than before and road noise while playing music dissapears.

Please remember, no big road noise difference without music but if you turn it on, road noise will be a thing of the past.

why were you disappointed?

How effective the deadening job is highly dependant on the materials used, techniques used, where used, and what sound issues the vehicle has/had.

Remember also, alot of factors are frequency dependant. Ambient noises (road noises, tire noise, engine noise) all interfere with our acoustical nirvana in various forms (amplitude and frequency). The key to a highly successful deadening job is to understand this, combat it using the proper materials in the proper places...not trying to use a mass loading mat to block/absord road noise for example. An example of using the proper technique is by isolating vibrations and elimintaing them one by one. Two plastic interior panels rattle together, place a soft material between them to eliminate the noise. Those are two examples of using the right materials for the job, the right technique for the application, and a little common sense to acheive the goal the most effective and efficient way possible.

One last example is, dont be afraid to use fiberglass. Does your roof flex but you dont want to added weight of mat, or the concern of it drooping/falling? Put a couple layers of fiberglass up there. It stiffens the roof, rather than merely adding weight/mass, and relieves many headaches of over-head sound deadening.

Lastly, be realistic. IMO the most common reaction after spending many hours and hundreds of dollars on a deadening job is to be dissapointed. Deadening your car will not impede all ambient noise. It WILL however lower that noise floor, in effect raising the sound floor of the stereo system inside the vehicle. I usually look at a deadening job as 30-40% effective against ambient noise, and the other 60-70% of its effectiveness is gained via increased headroom/soundfloor of the stereo system.

Cheers.

I'm much more optimistic on the reduction of road noise - I've had great results in the cars I've worked on, but it is very vehicle specific. If you have a loud exhaust or loud tires by design, you are going to have a tough time keeping the noise outside of the passenger compartment.

If you have an older car, things like dried out weather stripping are going to be big obstacles unless you replace them too. Every car is different and you really need to think about what you are doing to get the best resuts.

As far as what happens to music, it should all be good. You are going to still feel the vibrations in your body, but the annoying harmonic buzzes around you should be greatly reduced. Reduce resonance and flexing in the sheet metal should make the music louder and cleaner at every volume setting.

IMO it's the most important upgrade you can make. Upgrading equipment is kind of a waste if you don't improve the acoustics of the vehicle. Many time a stock system in a properly deadened car will sound better than a nice system in a stock car.
