Here a cop can only search if he has probable cause, and he can only search where he thinks where something is hidden. Like if they think you have drugs, they can search wherever the **** they want, but if they think you have like an assault rifle, they cannot search your glovebox (since an assault rifle wont' fit), but if he is searching due to weed or something that can fit, they can very well search your glovebox.
If the police arrest the driver for something, (say for having warrants or a DWI) then they automatically have the right to search the passenger compartment including the glovebox but not the trunk.

Exactly my point. Every state is different. While federal law may trump it, chances are you arent getting pulled over by a federal officer and if you are you have more to worry about then getting out of a ticket.

Still waiting for you to tell me what state you live in. Unless your state law explicitly bars police from searching in a vehicle, Federal law applies. In reality though, it's not even really Federal "law". It's the fucking Constitution.

If I ever have a little weed on me, I just take my front piece on my dash off and stick it behind my head unit. Cops aren't gonna search your dash unless they know you to be a big time drug dealer, have word of you carrying a lot of drugs, or if they bring in the K-9 and it alerts it, but they normally don't bring the K-9 unless they suspect you to have drugs in the first place.

Also if you have previous charges for drugs/weapons, that is probable cause to search your vehicle.
