Daily woofer choice

I'm what you would call an "average" enthusiast - probably not among the ranks of you folks, but I don't do ghetto installs and $20 woofers --

I have a custom glass box that I built for 4 12" subs - each chamber has like 1.3 - 1.4 CF (I know, very small). I built the box before I knew that much about anything so I guess I pay for it now.

The box is beautiful, so I'm stuck with it. I have 4 kenwood W3005 BEST BUY Subs (lol) and a HiFonics 1500D. It hits pretty good .. I mean I'm no competitor in any contests, just mainly about a good looking system that will sound good.

Oh, I drive an Expedition, so it's a fairly large interior. Basically, what subs and amps would you recommend?? I'd like to stick to 1 1500D that way I don't have to upgrade an alternator, add another battery, etc. I also know that 4 subs running 375 watts wont be as good as 1 running 1500 .. I was moderatly satisfied with 2 W3005's running on a rockford 501x, so that's where I'm at. I would like to dump the best buy subs, and get something a little more exclusive. Money isn't a huge deal, but I don't think it would require more than $300 per sub??

Thanks for the help .. Also if you don't mind posting a link to some of the manufacturers, etc because I have read a lot here, but don't necessarily know the manufactueres website address.

Well, i would look into rockford fosgate. The punch hx2. Not a bad sub. 2 of them would sound pritty damb good in a expo. And if u get the dual 4 ohm coils u could run it at 4 ohms to the amp and then u wouldnt have to worry about the alt. or the battery. If u want more spl, i would still stick with rockford, but get the power hx2. And then get dual 4ohm coils to run it at 1ohm. with that, u will mos def need a bigger alt. Do what u want and listen to who u want, but i love rockford and im stickin with them.

If You Are Just Using It As A Daily Driver Im Sorry To Say But I Think That Four Subs Is A Bit Of An Over Kill And Un-needed All You Need Is Two Subs You Might Want To Look At Some Diamond Cm3's Or Cm6' I Got Two M3's In My Explorer And Two Viper 600.1 Amps, One To Each Sub And It Bangs More Than I Can Handle And Sounds Great So If You Get The Same Set Up You Wont Have To Worry About The Batt.or The Alt. You Get Good Sound And It Fits You Price Range Check Diamondaudio.com And For The Amp Check Directed.com

I would think that you would be happy with small enclosures for a daily drives. Sure they don't have as much boom, but they will be very musical. I'd look at diamond cm3's and run everything in parrallel if the map can handle it. Get 4 ohm coils and if my math isn't bad you can run a .5 ohm load. You could use parrallel series for a 2 ohm load.

Yoyu caould also get 2 ohm dvc's and runa 1 ohm load.

Thanks for the suggestions. Honestly I would probably prefer 2 subs but since I put a ton of time into the box, and it looks really good I gotta stick with 4 - it'll be a car show car soon, so the looks matter a lot.

Is there a "golden rule" about how much power you can pull before you need to upgrade your electricals? The Expedition has a 130 Amp factory alternator, and I have a 2.5 farad cap.. I'll probably replace my factory battery (yup, factory 6 years old) with an optima yeller top. I also have a Rockford 501x amp that powers my components - 4 x 65w rms max. I haven't done the "magick 3" yet but I will when it gets warmer.

Can anyone tell me how to figure out how much power I'm drawing? Oh, I also have underbody neon LED lights, and factory fog lights. I'll be adding 3-4 screens, and a gamecube off of an inverter (or maybe just a DC car kit - should take less juice right?)

Thanks for all the help, and sorry for the newb questions!

**Edit**

What about the infinity kappa perfect 12vq?? I have 2 sets of infinity kappa perfect 5.1 components and like them. They handle 400w rms and would fit perfect in my box .. plus one thing about a show car is brand name recognition, so I think infinity has a good rep. Opinions?? Also they are $250 per woofer

wow, $250 a peice for perfects?? WAY TOO MUCH, also the subs we recommended will noticeably outperform them...AND cost less money. As far as electrical system...i'd sell the cap...it's useless, it adds an extra load to the charging system and it's a band-aid for a weak electrical system. Look into a 200 amp alternator from http://www.execessiveamperage.com, a red top under the hood for starting, and a yellow top in the rear for all your auxillary stuff. That'll help out a lot, and it'll give you more time with the engine off for times at shows. I'd seriously look into the K series...they look VERY clean...and it'll give ur system a unique look. peace

As far as your alternator, you've got a pretty big one as it is, so I wouldn't worry about upgrading right now. On the off chance that you do have problems with it once everything is installed, you probably won't need to get a brand new one, just get the stock one rewound.

As far as the Perfects..........stay away from them. I'll leave it at that.

Hey thanks again..

Last question (for now!!)

If I add another battery, I wire them together right? I guess I don't understand how the aux battery is charged. Do I move the alternator wire?

I would assume + to + and - to -, as voltage wouldn't change but amperage would be increased??

It seems to me that this is almost asking for eD O series 12s. Sealed enclosure with 1.3ish per sub and just shy of 400 watts per sub. He said $300 per woofer and the O's are $200 so he saves some money that he can put into an upgraded alternator and a battery regulator. 4 single 4 ohm VC wired in parallel for a 1 ohm load on the amp.

I would definitely have a remote sub level control for daily driving purposes with 4 subs.
