Im tryign to understand a crossover and how it works. I get the human ear can only hear from 20-200hz, and the crossover blocks certain freq. correct?

So lets say i set my highpass on my amp at 45HZ does this mean that nothing lower then 45 hz will get to my speakers? and then lets say I set my lowpass at 150 hz along with the Highpass at 45 hz, does that mean my speakers will get 45-150 hz? Let me know if im on the right track.

And what is the genral freq. range speaker want? Isnt it usually

~20-65 Hz for subs

~50-130 HZ for mids

~120-200 hz for tweets

let me know if im on the right track.

You basically have the right idea, though the crossover point in not exact. When people talk about crossovers they often talk about slope, this is the # of db's per octave that will be attenuated at the crossover point. The steeper the plope, the more the signal is attenuated ( 18db/octave cuts the signal more rapidly than 12db/octave) You do have it right, that where it's highpassed, the high frequencies pass, etc. Crossover point depends largely on the speakers and your personal preference. Generally subs play 80hz and down, mids from 63-80hz to around 4500-5000hz, and tweeters above that. As for the example you set above, if your lowpass is @150hz, the sub will play 150hz and down (too high for most) And if you highpass @45 hz, your mids will play everything down to 45hz (which is really on the low side, not to many 6.5's like playing much lower than around 63hz) Hope that helps

I thought the human ear can only hear up to 200 hz or is it 20,000 hz

yea the human ear can hear 20hz-20khz..

i was wondering why your crossover points on the tweets were so low //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/tongue.gif.6130eb82179565f6db8d26d6001dcd24.gif thats still in midbass territory

My Dls Tweets play really low, which helps them image male vocals extremely well. I suppose most tweets need to be crossed higher, I just took a guess at where. My Dls are playing down to around 4000hz, and I am able to run my midbasses down to 50hz no problem, though when driving the sub needs to play at 63hz instead of 50 to give them a bit more authority- though it sounds perfect when sitting statically. I realize my car/setup is something of an anomaly- very few mids will tolerate the crossover points I am using.
