crossover for subs and midbass?!?

ok i was told its better to use the hpf and lpf off of amp rather than deck is that true? im running phoenix gold rsds 6.5 front and rear i have about 40-50 rms per speaker. i am not using lpf or hpf on amp but i am using it on deck. lpf for sub is at 50 and hpf is set at 125... i am running an older alpine amp not sure what kind it was given to me but works. but i am just not satisfied with the sound. could it be just because of the amp? i have a buddy with PG RSDs and they sound alot better than my do. could it be car dependent as well because of insulation?

Turn your sub off and set your components as low as they will possibly play without distortion. A crappy set should be able to play down to 80 if installed porperly. Then set the sub.

80 and 80 is usually a good start, but if your comps can take 60 then 60 and 60 would better. You want your comps playing midbass and subs playing the sub bass.

Edit to add I dont think it will matter if you use the amps or your HU.
