Improper shutdown does not make you loose bookmarks. Bookmarks are stored and saved in a file not in ram. so shutting down improperly so have no affect on the bookmarks unless you were accessing/writing to the file at the exact same time when the computer shut down.
Well, as for the Firefox-Opera comparison, I just downloaded Opera, and uninstalled Firefox after playing around with it. So, Opera gets it in my book...

exactly... it sounds like a weird as worm/virus or something... but restoring the computer to an earlier date seems like it would bring up the profile you saved at that time... (which includes my documents, which is where your favorites are under)
