I'm looking on Craigslist for a subwoofer and I found a JL 12W6V2 with a custom enclosure. I know "there is better to be had for the money" but I'd like to just give it a try at least. I talked him down from $250 to $200 for the sub and enclosure. He said he's powered it with a Kicker ZX300.1 Monoblock. He said he had it professionally installed and the box custom made so the gain should have been set appropriately and the box is just a gamble I suppose since he doesn't know the dimensions, it was just made for him.

My concerns are: What should I look/Listen for when I go to see it? What should I do to test it? Anything else to ensure it's not damaged or anything?

Hard to tell from the pics but it's either dirt or the surround is f'd up.

As for testing: You can bring a digital multimeter to verify ohmage. Listen to it and make sure there isn't any cracking or scraping of any kind. Thats about all you can do with it still in the box.

as stated above...

take multi meter and if possible listen to the sub.

its possible the sub might not sound that great because he might have it in a pre fab type box.

Some shops "custom" boxes are nothing special

I bought a sub a few months ago and when I went to listen to it, the sub sounded terrible.

His ported box was just a box with a hole cut in it. No port.

I'll try asking for different pictures without the flash, maybe in sunlight or something. You can buy just the surrounds for about $25 though on Ebay? I'm sure he'll let me take it out of the box. So is there anything additional I can do with it out? Ohms should read close to 4, correct?
