Cover under rear deck

I know there's no such thing as stupid questions only stupid ppl so here goes...I have a 2000 stang GT with the Mach system. What is the purpose of the large black plastic cover underneath my rear deck in between the rear amps? Is it merely for protection or an enclosure for the factory drivers or both. I'm putting a sub box underneath the rear deck and i need to remove it if possible for extra clearance. If it is an enclosure will my box underneath it affect the sound of the stock rear speakers? (the subs are front facing in the box) Thanks in advance!

wow..thanks for the quick posts....im actually just taking a break from the install....ive invested alot of money thus far...however i want to retain the factory mach system for the time being....im installing 2 13W7's with a JL 1000/1 and an aftermarket deck at present...ive already gone lengths to integrate the factory Mach amps which is an ordeal let me tell you.....in the future i will replace all my mids and highs...but for now i need to keep em....i ran a post in a mustang only forum as well....i havent yet taken off the cover but it seems it may be an enclosure of sorts because from the underside in the trunk there are no screws or anything holding it so it must be accessible from the top thru the rear deck which may involve removing the speakers. if i did remove it and it was an enclosure...having the basket side of the rear speakers exposed...would the bass reflex from the sub enclosure affect the performance of the rear speakers? i assume no because alot of vehicles have the underside of the rear speakers exposed and i havent heard anything such as cancellation or whatever while running subs in the trunk

I just checked on a site with alot of Mach 460 info and the cover im referring to is a 10L (who the **** measures enclosure volume in liters..lol) enclosure for the rear woofers so if i remove it i am going to sacrifice performance...although with 2 13W7s in such close proximity will i actually notice an audible difference if the rear speakers are not enclosed?

I've worked on a convertable GT before... I had to remove a cover in the trunk to get to the amps, it was just there for cosmetic reasons to make the trunk look sealed up.

Not sure if the one in the coupe is the same thing.

I checked on a Mach site and the cover for the convertibles is different.....i guess my only question now remains to be whether or not removing the cover/enclosure will affect the sound quality of the rear woofers....i understand that a bass driver operates better enclosed but with the 2 13's in an enclosure directly beneath those will i notice an audible difference? thanks

in my cobra i had removed all traces of oem gear. that black plastic thing will also limit how much depth you can get out of your box and how much height you can get as well.

Almost all countries who have no association with america. That's like asking who measures speaker sizes in milimeters.
lol....obviously I am familiar with the standards of measurement in various countries....I was just joking about the fact that 99.9 percent of all enclosure size references are in cubic ft.

Anyways, thanks for the posts...and I think i will invest the necessary additional money on all new high/mids and an amp to power them considering I might as well complete the whole thing while i have the car apart instead of breaking the install up. Which leads me to my next question...can anyone advise me to what would be better for soundstage...no rear fill or what...id like to keep the interior of the car as stealth as possible by utilizing OEM locations....Thanks for the help

in my cobra i only ran front stage. that is a stock 6x8" location, so you have a few options. make a plate for a round speaker sucka s a 6" or 6-1/2". or you can run a 6x8 or 5x7. i made a plate for mine and cur the doors a little bit to house a 7" speaker, but unless you are super serious about it, i woudlnt cut anything up if i didnt absolutly have to. the best drop in speaker option i have found is the boston SL80. it is a component set in a plate specialy designed for 6x8's and 5x7" openings, more specialically, fords.

thanks bri487, im finished for the day and it turns out that I either have to remove the 4 factory rear speakers from the enclosure under the deck and install them in the rear deck itself.....i dont think removing them from the enclosure will affect SQ since they are just mid/bass drivers. I absoulutely cannot fit my sub box under the rear dek without the huge *** enclosure/soundboard out. I will however look into the Boston SL80 to replace my fronts..I have half of the *** end of the car apart at present and after running just my aftermarket AVIC-N1 to the factory amps the sound is 10x better than the factor HU to the amps so Im happy already. Thanks for the help and if anyone can give me some insight to how technically removing the rear mid/bass' from the factory enclosure will affect the SQ it would be awesome...otherwise ill just pullem out and check out how it sounds for myself. Thanks again!
