Confusion on Ported or Sealed for SQ

I have been wondering about something for a while and I finally decided to ask.

My priorities are SQ: 1st , SPL: 1 ¼

This is what has puzzled me. I have asked before what would yield better SQ and I have been told that a sealed would give me better SQ but a properly tuned ported would be just as good. What I do not understand is on a ported box, if you used it for SQ and just for example tuned it to 50 Hz, how would it give you good Sq above or below the tuned frequency? It seems to me that a sealed would be better for SQ because it would give you better response over a wider range. I this accurate or am I on crack? If I am wrong about this, please explain why.

Thanks!!

starting off...it depends what sub you got....lets say for my 12L7....12l7 should be in a ported box......the bigger the box..the deeper the bass..the deeper the bass...the better sq....if i just had like a 1.4 cf enclosure for my 12l7, it would be louder but it would have a high pitch bass, witch isnt good sound quality at all....well thats all i know..goodluck.

Depends on the sub, but a ported system will never have the SQ of a sealed one, if the ported system is properly tuned then it will have the sq but not as good as sealed.

a sealed box will give you a flatter response which in turn gives you better SQ, but a low

ported box will give you better SQ, (than a hi tuned box) but once you go below 27 hz

your pretty much waisting space and better off going sealed. And your 50 hz

ported example was terrible, you only tune that high for SPL purposes. If you

want SQ go sealed. A little sealed box with a lot of power will give you

exceptional bass.

generally speaking the SQ of a ported box above its tuning frequency (assuming its a quality driver in a suitable box) is so close to the SQ of a sealed box its really not going to make a difference for most people. Thats why for SQ ported boxes are always ported low. If a box is tuned to 28hz you really arent sacrificing much except below 28hz but gain alot of output. If a box is tuned at 40hz you obviously are going to sacrafice quite a bit for higher output at upper bass frequencies.

The problem is so called REAL sound quality recording material includes windpipes and instruments and shit that may go down into the teens. If you listen to classical or so called sq material that actually does have an extended low end you really dont have a choice but to go sealed. For 90% of the people here a ported box tuned in the high 20's will sacrifice virtually nothing to a sealed box with the kind of music they play. that being said I use a sealed box for the simple facts that a) sealed play plenty loud for me and b) A box that fits my car is 1rt priority not a box that suites a particular speaker best. that means fiberglass, odd shaping, unknown volume prior to completion, smaller size box and all the variables that would make attempting to tune a ported box a big mess. A big slot ported box taking up my entire hatch space wont happen before hell freezes over.
