Cone front - how far from the trunk lid?

I've got two subs in a sealed enclosure. I made it so it fits perfectly into the area of the trunk closest to the cabin (what I call the back of the trunk, as if you were standing outside the car looking into the trunk, but it's all relative). The drivers face towards the trunk lid. This maximizes trunk space. However, I was curious to see if this was the best spot for sound, so I moved it up about half way, tested it, then I moved it so there was 6" of space between the cone and the trunk lid. It seems to sound a bit better and louder when I'm really close to the lid, but I lose all my trunk space in the process. I know it has something to do with the development of the sound waves and the possibility of reflections causing cancellation, but I don't know more than that.

Does anyone have any experience playing with these distances? I know this is more prevalent when running a ported enclosure, but I've got a sealed one. Thanks

put it as close as possible to the trunk lid without the cone touching.

its what ever sounds best to you.

as long as the woofer does not hit anything at full excursion your good.

This. It has to do with impedance matching the woofer system to the impedance of the air from what I am told.

If you built to listen to music and play around a bit, if it sounds good it is good and as long as the woofer isn't hitting anything you're fine.

I ran 2 12" sws in a sealed (actually 2 separate boxes) in my car for about a year and the best sound came from having them 6" from the trunk rear. Lost nearly all my trunk space, but it was easy to move them to the sides to put things in the trunk.
