Well this has been going on for about a month off and on.. one day i turn my computer on and it says Disc read error... nothing would work to get past it.. so i jump my CMOS.. then it booted up fine .. and comp worked for a good 2 weeks.. then it happened again.. this time Jump CMOS wouldn't work... i tryed everything so i had to reformat.. couldnt save none of my files //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif so after i reformed it was good... and remember every time ive gotten these Disc read errors my comp freezes to where i have to restart my computer and thats where the read disc occurs... well today it happen again.. it was fine for 3 days. i have Updated BIOS so its not that.. and i have no Extra drive to change them out. i'm thinking its a Faulty HDD but if it was seem like it wouldnt work at all and boot up. and BIOS recognizes the drive. so i don't wanna buy a new HDD and thats not the problem. This problem has been going on way to long. any advice?

what kind of hd is it? you can download a western digital hd diagnostic program that will check it for faultyness. it sounds like a bad hd.
Samsung 250GB 5400 HDD i mean i thought if a HDD is bad it stops working all together... but this one will boot up sometimes then sometime it just won't boot up into XP anymore it will just give me the Disc error..

bestbuy has a seagate 500GB SATA for 89 bucks think ill pick it up and try it.. has to be the HDD cant think of anything else it could be...

I've had some bad luck with samsung hdd's in the past, could be that. Try taking out the CMOS/BIOS battery for like 30 mins and then put it back in, might reset itself and help, I usually have to do that once every couple months with the parents' computer, think the mobo is going out slowly on it

not necessarily, i mean it's not like an on/off thing, an HDD can go bad and still somewhat work. Sometimes they just start getting smaller as parts of it become dead. It's slowly going bad but you can't still use the good parts. It very well could be the HDD.

As far as paying 89 bucks for 500gb no freaking way. Slickdeals had a 1TB HDD on there the other day for the same price. If you can wait until black friday you'll get a hell of a deal.

Thats the thing. i couldn't wait for shipping or friday i hate crowds omg lol. i went ahead and bought it. Because no way im gonna be out of a computer for a whole week. i could of got it for about 60 bucks on newegg but again didn't wanna wait on shipping so i paid alil more. i hope it works gonna be pissed if its not the HDD.

Doesnt make sense i unhooked the SATA cables and put them back in then it booted up. but see this keeps happening comp will freeze then i boot it back up and i get the Disc error, doesn't make sense what it could be..

I'd go ahead and replace the HDD. If it keeps happening with the new one then you've at least narrowed down the suspected components. You could always sell the extra drive or throw it in and have 2!
