Starting last night, when I try to log off of my Vista machine, I get a black screen. All of the normal events take place, then bam, black screen. Need to hard boot to restart. Here is what I am running:

Vista Home Premium

Msi MoBo

2 gb ram

Intel P4 3.0gHz

NVIDIA GeForce 7600gs

(I know, all old as hell...still runs like a dream, though!)

Any help is appreciated!

on this black screen do you see a "C:\" ?????

Sorry I had to. Hope ya get it fixed, maybe its a USB device not powering down similar to the post up above.

mine use to go blank here and there, doesn't do it anymore. it was on my laptop i would hit the button to turn the computer to sleep when it went blank and then i would turn it on again, worked like a charm. I took out the hdd and memory and dusted out the system, and works fine now

Don't you mean UPgrade?
My new computer came with Vista and I switched to XP Pro in about 2 weeks lol
i say it's an Upgrade but it is considered downgrade since it's older i guess.

XP sp3 and i got 99 problems and my PC aint one //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/fyi.gif.9f1f679348da7204ce960cfc74bca8e0.gif

Well, thought I would finish the thread that I started, so here is an update:

I searched for quite a few hours, with no other resolution found. The closest thing I found to explain the problem is that there is a small (read: 11.6kb) file that can become corrupted and cause the problem I explained in my first post. This file is not repairable via System Restore, System Recovery, or Startup Repair, three of the main ways of repairing Windows without a reformat and reinstall.

Finally decided to reinstall Windows. Went back to XP, as the PC I am using was built for it. It ran Vista just fine, but you can definitely tell a performance difference between the two OS's.

So, that was my day today. Reinstalling Windows today and moving music, video, documents, and everything else to my external, then back on. For some reason, I can think of many better ways to spend a day.

Personally, I've had Vista on my Dell XPS M1710 since June '07 and I have yet to have a problem with it yet. It's never froze or ever had a problem. I left it on for 65 days straight to try and make it freeze. Nothing.

At the moment I'm at home, on XP SP3 and there's a fcckton of spyware on here. Trying to clean it off. My Vista laptop doesn't get anything, ever.
