Chem questions

Not mad because he "thought of it," angry because like most people he's not willing to think his way through something. Like many members of the forum, I've kicked my *** through college (and a shit load of chemistry to boot), earning my grade.
I know you got a near 4.0 with Chem, and I appreciate your guidance. But you're making assumptions, that, because people posted answers that that's what I was looking for. I'm looking for help, a tutor... and you just helped me with my last question. Thank you.

All the elements on the first row will have a +1 charge and all the elements on the second row will have a +2 charge.

All the elements on the 17th row will have a -1 charge and the elements one the 16th row will have -2 charge.

The elements on the 18th are noble gasses and have no charge

Fixed for ya

The goal is to "fill" the valence shell with electrons (ie 8). Chlorine for example, has 2 3s electrons and 5 2p electrons. In order to reach 8, and thus an "Argon core," you need to add an electron - and since the electron's unit charge is negative, you get a -1 charge on chlorine in it's ionic form.

This generally holds true for first and second group metals, and for the halides...but not for transition metals.
