Chem questions

You've got to be more specific than that...

Oxygen, as a diatomic molecule can have a net charge of 0, or -1 for instance (superoxide). The oxidation state, which I assume you're talking about is - in general - -2 for O in a molecule. This too, can change though depending on if it's a terminal oxygen, and what else it's attached to (though it's ox. state is ALMOST always 2-).

Calcium is a little simpler, as it's most readily formed cation and oxidation state are the same (2+). With that said, there are, too, situations where that's not the case. It's a pretty safe bet on calcium though.

How do I solve this?

Ah, simple enough, I plugged the answer in and figured out how you got that. Thank you.

I don't understand how I'm supposed to know this?

An ionic bond between metals and oxygen produces

a hydride.

a bromide.

a chloride.

a metal oxide.

a phosphide.

Think a little? I'm asking for help, not even asking for the answers. Help me figure them out, give me guidance, my online class isn't teaching me how to do this.
Look at the last question you posted please. A metal bonded to Oxygen...and your answers have: hydride (H-), chloride (Cl-), Bromide (Br-), and Phosphide (P 2-) as choices...all of which are non-metals, and non-oxygen. It only leaves a single choice even if you don't have much of a clue as to what the material covered by the question.

Don't be mad because he thought of it first
Not mad because he "thought of it," angry because like most people he's not willing to think his way through something. Like many members of the forum, I've kicked my *** through college (and a shit load of chemistry to boot), earning my grade.
