Cheap DD Replicas

So they do NOT have the pole channels like DD, eh ?
So... two differences from the 9500G motor. No horizontal top plate channels and not vertical pole channels. This means that the 9500G will still handle more power due to the added cooling.
You keep forgetting the 105 oz of magnet difference //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wow.gif.23d729408e9177caa2a0ed6a2ba6588e.gif

What about the pole diameter, or the ID of the top plate? I'm betting the gap is different as well.

Corey where abouts in NY are you?? wanna do a drop test with that thing against my AQHD3 //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif I have plenty of power //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

Egg,
We have meet @ ss electronics before @ a NESPL show. Im from the finger lakes area (between cuse and rochester) I got a DD 9510G recone coming, and would be more then happy lets you test it after its reconed.

You think it would be cheaper to get a 12" konaki, use a 10" basket and motor?

I bet we can make an 8" version out of the 1508....If you attached a baffle to the basket before mounting the motor.

I'm betting the gap is exactly the same, I doubt they would change anything important in the design as far as geometry when ripping off a design as successful as the DD 9500.

There is not a 105 oz (6.5 pounds) magnet (well, motor anyway) difference. My 9500G motor weighs 43 pounds, bare. Fully assembled Konaki is 48 pounds (just weighed them both). The basket / coil / soft parts on the Konaki certainly do not weigh 11.5 pounds -- it is typically 4-5 pounds, exactly the difference from the 9500G motor to the fully assembled Konaki.

Now... some of this weight difference is the fact that the Konaki has more steel in the motor as it doesn't have the cooling channels, but it's not 6.5 pounds worth either... my guess is Konaki lists the magnet weight wrong and/or their back plate is also heavier than DDs and that explains the rest of the weight differential. Either way, the DD design requires a stronger magnet system to achieve the same BL due to the cooling channels, they directly reduce BL... so even if the magnet is slightly bigger the DD design needs it.

We also don't know the differences of steel grades and whatnot going on in there either. There are alot of variables... but by my estimate the total motor weight of the 9500G vs. the Konaki is darn near exactly the same.

---

But, again, splitting hairs here... it's a DD rip-off without all the cooling and for 1/4 the price... bottom line is the 9500G will handle more power and will hold together better from the factory. You can sure up the Konaki glue and have a pretty loud speaker, but are still stuck with the design flaw regarding the inner roll of the bottom spider inverting itself -- even still you can tear it down and get SPL number close to DD in all but the most extreme power levels (where DDs cooling will win out) for 1/2 the cost even after re-coning.

and as far as budget spl setups, this should own almost everything in it's price for ouput. (read not sq lol) hell then when you blow it jsut find a better recone and you'll still have a budget sub for and incredible price. recones are what right around $120 or so, that $240 for a massive sub. that's not bad to me.

Either way, Id be happy to put it against the AQ, care for a road trip //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif up here?? I have a TL, if you do decide to come up bring the woofer and a camera, and I'll see if Smithers wants to come down for the testing as well //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

I'm sure the first thing on every woofer manufacturer's mind is to claim that the magnet weight of their motor is over 25% smaller than what it really is. That's a brilliant marketing tactic! //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/rolleyes.gif.c1fef805e9d1464d377451cd5bc18bfb.gif

The overall motor weight is a piss poor indicator. 6.5 pounds of steel has a volume of roughly 23 cubic inches. That is not very much material at all. There are so many places to hide 23 cubic inches in a motor structure that is well over 300 cubic inches total. You have already mentioned several of these places yourself.

I'll not argue with you on the bottom line though. For the money, ehh why not. It's definately not going to compare very well with a 9500, but it doesn't have to when you can buy 3 of these for the same money.

The thing is, the DD motor REQUIRES more magnet to achieve the same BL. Even if it DOES have 6.25 more pounds of magnet... it doesn't matter, it needed it, the Konaki sub has more motor strength than the 9500E that I measured, and likely darn near exactly the same as the 9500G -- less magnet or not.

So, the point is totally moot even if you would like to continue debating it... even when I suggested, as you noted, other places where the weight could be in the motor. Places whereby the BL is increased without adding magnet to the motor //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif End result BL is the same, but the DD motor does end up w/ better cooling.

I never suggested Konaki would have listed the weight wrong on purpose... but I doubt they have a great deal of engineering prowess, so my suggestion was they made a mistake. But likely, as we have determined, the weight is in the steel that Konaki does NOT remove from the motor.

it seems the company may not be very organized, i would assume the company was trying to claim less motor weight as much as it was a typo. seems more logical, especially for a chinese company. i would also think there are a lot of spelling mistakes in the owners manual. lol. but someone else can confirm this.
