Subs blown after 1 minute

So I bought some used DD 9917s off CACO and apparently they were just reconed. Well, I had a box built for one of them just to try it out and I started to play it in the car and it wasn't exactly very loud and literally after a minute or so, the sub completely locked up.

It was wired to two ohms @ 3000 watts which is pretty much nothing for a 9917.

So, after that, I hook up the other one. I notice the strong smell of a burning sub after about 20 seconds of playing it loud then about 2 hours later it starts making a sound like a spring vibrating or something. This one isn't blown YET but I sense it's damaged. Any of you guys have experience with something like this happening before?

what amp? how are gains/ssf/boost set??

Atomic 5000.1. no bass boost, gain at about 30%.

It's not my amp. I just swapped out my 2 memphis 15s at .5 ohm and it had worked fine

Pics? Did you notice any rubbing on the coi/former when you pushed on the cone prior to putting them in?

It didn't seem so. They didn't seem to be damaged at all. that's what's so weird about it. uhh I have a picture of it but you can't really see anything wrong with it.

There are a few possibilites...

either smaller coils were used then what should have been, the coils were not properly alligned, or more then likley the varnish holding the coils together was not properly cured which caused them to fall apart the first time they got hot...

Whoever did the recones should be comming good for this..

What motor are they.

Don't know if you seen it or know but a guy on here picked up some motors that were SVC only if yours are the same way and a DVC that is thicker was used.

i would pull the blown one apart and see if the coil is burnt, unwound or if it was rubbing. i bought a xxx a couple years ago and the coil was missaligned and wore down in about an hour, it sounded fine while it was playing then just stopped.

I just sent it off to DD. I'm sure they will be able to tell me what happened.
