! Car Audio related Research Paper for college? Good idea or not?

So, I'm trying to come up with a good research topic for my formal report which is due a few months from now and will need to be at least 7 pages long.

This is a technical writing class so I'm assuming I'll be allowed to use some pictures and bullets, so 7 pages won't be hard. I guess.

Anyways, I need help choosing my research topic + research questions

Can you help me choose a topic?

Some topics examples are: upgrading a computer system, purchasing a color printer, digital camera or DVD player, refinancing a house, investigating investment opportunities, and choosing an ISP.

Ok Ok.

I know you're about to reply with a message say "go away and do your own homework and research".

Before you do that, hear me out. The reason why I am posting here is because after I looked at the example topics given, it gave me an idea of choosing my topic to be related to car audio.

I'm planning on doing research on how to do my next 2,300$ build, so why not use some of the stuff I'm learning in a research project right?

So, as for my research topic, I guess it's "Car Audio?" It's probably too vague and I might need you guys help narrowing it down.

As far as "Research questions" go (questions I will be researching and including in my report), here's a list of what I'm thinking about doing:

What are the steps one must take before buying a sub-woofer?

- Setting a limit

- Knowing what else that will be needed (amp, wiring and etc).

- How to research online for products

- The things one must be wary about when going to best buy / circuit city

Well, that's just an idea I had. I don't know if it's going to be capable of having 7 pages or not.

Should I make a more vague "topic" and do like "The steps in setting up the perfect audio system for your car" and then cover topics listed above and also how to install things also?

Should I cover fundamentals of electric circuits in the report?

Note: I'm still working on my Electrical Engineering major. I've taken all my calculus and math classes required. I have knowledge on ideal laws of circuits and such.

However, I have no experience in hooking up my own system. I plan on doing A LOT of reading on what to buy and how to hook things up. I know I won't be able to use all of the things I'll be finding for my report, but hopefully with your guys help, I'll know exactly that is usable.

By the way, I was going to take the easy way out and do the topic "how to choose an ISP provider", but I much rather write on something I truly want to do research on.

Help is appreciated guys! //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crazy.gif.c13912c32de98515d3142759a824dae7.gif:crazy://content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crazy.gif.c13912c32de98515d3142759a824dae7.gif:crazy:

I think that writing a paper on how to buy a sub sounds like something a 7th grader would do, not a college student.

I don't really have any other suggestions though.

Why not a paper on how to go active?
edit: If you're an EE major, you should be able to easily understand enough about how to go active to write a decent paper.
I don't think I want to research on how to go "active" because I don't plan on going active with my next upgrade.

I wrote my research paper on the "tweel" last semester for my technical writing class. Google it, its a interesting topic and easily cover 7 pages, mine was 14 I think.

I know what you mean. That's what I thought.

However, in my teacher's instruction sheet, the examples listed were the topics done in her previous classes.

"upgrading a computer system, purchasing a color printer, digital camera or DVD player, refinancing a house, investigating investment opportunities, and choosing an ISP."

The minute I read those topic "examples", I've realized that this was going to be an easy assignment, so why not take advantage of it and do it on something enjoyable right?

This is just one of those college classes that I was suppose to take 1-2 year ago but I just saved it for last because it was easy =P.

I still need a couple more terms before I can transfer to a university as a Junior though //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif

Community college blah.

its a good idea, i would emphasize the install over product though. do some fiberglassin' or something other than just building abox and runnin wires. show something that few people can do.

I think I'm going to save that one for one of my speech classes that I'll have next term.

It does look pretty interesting. 2016 until they actually have model cars with it huh? //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/tongue.gif.6130eb82179565f6db8d26d6001dcd24.gif

So you're suggesting for topic "How to install a car audio system"?

And then I can write about what fiberglassing means and how it's done and the history of it and the purpose of it?

Basically, I guess I am working on narrowing the topic down and figuring out what my options are as far as this 7+ page report goes.

I could probably even write a 7 page report relating schemes involving best buy / circuit city sales people and such hehe.

I wonder if I should just make this topic really vague and cover random stuff about car audio and somehow make it all flow.

Why not a paper on going passive :)
That would put the class to sleep.

I'll be using so much jargon they will all be staring at me.

Oh yeah, besides having the 7+ page written report, I'll also need to do a SHORT presentation on what I've found regards my research. I wouldn't be able to think of what to tell the class regards of going passive.

Also, I don't know if it's possible to effectively write a 7+ page paper on "going passive" >

If that's the route you want to take, then your Title could be something like "The design and installation of a custom mobile audio system."
Much like Bing does in his awesome installs, you will need to lay out your objective, goals and any constraints.

The objective could be "upgrade the stock audio system"

Goals could be SQ or SPL, Stealth and within a certain budget.

Some constraints could be budget, limited space or vehicle is a convertible, or can't sacrifice trunk space, but if you do it must be quickly and easily removed, - it must all be completed in 2 days, etc.

Then what you need to do is come up with a plan to achieve all the goals listed. You could cover the selection of components - including why more money is spent on subs, comps etc. given the goals and constraints. Wiring diagrams and all materials needs. Placement of selected components, testing and tuning.................and ultimately.............did you achieve the goads set forth? Is the customer satisfied? Did you come in under budget and on time?

So, that was an idea someone gave me.

Any other ideas guys? //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif
