Friday, August 08, 2008 -- ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Consumer-oriented monthly Car Audio & Electronics will cease publication at the end of the year, its publisher has announced in a letter to advertisers.
In an Aug. 7 letter to advertisers, Howard Lim, vice president and group publisher of publisher Source Interlink Media, made the announcement in a letter to advertisers.
That letter was obtained by Mobile Electronics magazine on Friday.
"As you know, the car audio industry has been very challenging over the past few years and Car Audio & Electronics has tried to maintain its viability during these economically challenged times," Lim wrote in the letter. "At this juncture, we regret to inform you that Source Interlink Media has chosen to remove [the magazine] from their portfolio."
The magazine will publish its last issue in November, after two decades of covering the car audio industry. In its heyday, the magazine maintained a list of more than 140,000 paid subscribers.
In recent years, the subscriber list had dwindled to about 40,000.
The closure of the publication should cause manufacturers to reevaluate how they spend advertising dollars, said Keith Lehmann, senior vice president of consumer electronics at Kenwood USA.
"It's a wakeup call to anybody who supports these books to say broaden your message," Lehmann said. "It illustrates how this industry is evolving. Everything that stands still will be left in the dust. And this book stood still."
