I found this to be quite interesting:

The origin of the act itself can be traced back to the early 1990s, when VHS tapes were in circulation[citation needed]. A movie would be rented from video rental stores and have Rick Astley's music video edited over important parts of the film. Rental VHS tapes could only be recorded over if the viewer covered a small hole on the back of the cassette. This would allow the VCR to record over the tape.
