I have two Type-R's in a big ported box connected to a 1200 watt amp at one ohm. Now, can anyone explain this: My friend has two SONY XPLOD'S to a 900 watt (or something like that) amp in a sealed box and cheap Wal-Mart wiring. His **** seems to hit cleaner and gets lower and deeper, too. What the hell is going on?

I hope you don't mean that the box has a high tuning frequency... that could certainly explain why it's not hitting as clean/low/deep as it should.

Also, sealed boxes > ported for what you're looking for, unless it's tuned low. But even then, you might not get the best sound you want from your subs. Try to throw them in a sealed box and see how you like it.

Well lets look at your complaints... your friend's system seems to hit cleaner and lower. Much of that discrepancy may be attritbuted to the enclosure differences. Not to mention the different veicles, positioning, brands, etc.
Now, if you say his system is also louder than yours, then Id start thinking there is a problem.

flip that box over and face at the hatch
Oh yeah wow, I didn't even notice it was forward firing, into the rear seat. Definitely turn that box around, ideally having it 6-12 inches from the rear wall/tailgate/whatever. That will almost definitely improve output, probably by quite abit.
