can I use old RAM from broke laptop?

If it fits in the slot, you can try it without risk of damaging anything. If it doesn't boot then it isn't compatible. As for the charging port, i fix them every week, basically disassemble the whole lappy, then resolder the joints and add some epoxy to keep it from happening again. Takes me about 1 hour. I charge 40 an hour. Not trying to solicit you, just trying to give you an idea of how much it would cost. I am in illinois, so that wouldn't be cost effective to have me do it lol.

ok, scratch the ram swap idea. I thought it had 2gb ram, instead it has (2) 512 mb ram sticks, so my main focus is to fix the computer so my daughter has something to play her reading games online with.

Any laptop disassembly tips? I've taken all the screws off the bottom, but it won't come apart. Do i need to take out the hard drive? It's a toshiba a105s4384 laptop if that matters.

small update:

Took the computer somewhat apart (enough to look at charging port) and it appears that the charing port isn't connected to the motherboard, it's just a jack, with 2 wires going inside the computer, it simply lines up to the holes on the outside of the computer. After seeing this, I plug in the charger and it boots up/charges and works fine, except when the charger is moved, so i'm thinking it's just a bad charger. I'm going to go to staples tomorrow and buy a charger to see if that fixes it.

yeah chargers go bad just as often as the jack itself. People dont realize how much is inside the converter box, and they drop it and bounce it around and everything else and eventually shit gets broke loose from the circuit board in there. Too bad you dissassembled the whole **** thing before realizing that it was the charger. Get you a good multimeter //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

yea you can test it with a multimeter most of the time, some of the chargers need a load on them before you can measure anything, my toshiba didnt though. I took mine all apart and a couple componets on the board were burned cause I spilled a rum and coke on it lol. It needs a board.
