i have 2 diamond audio CM312D2 12in subs in this box:

and it hits some incredible lows, but when the bass drum hits it distorts or over powers the subs or something... they make a nasty sound when it hits the bass drum basically at any freq when the volume is turned up... i am thinking about swaping these out for a set of alpine type-R 12's in the same box... what do you think? whould they hit hard in this box and not ping out like the Diamond audio's that i have?

i am using a Kenwood KAC-9102D amp at 2ohms:

1000W peak output @ 4 ohms, bridged

1700W peak output @ 2 ohms

1000W peak output @ 4 ohms

500W RMS (continuous), bridged

500W RMS (continuous) @ 4 ohms

850W RMS (continuous) @ 2 ohms

sounds like it is maybe bottoming out more than anything or just like they are far overpowered or something.

don't get me wrong, they freakin pound (make my vision blurry/ makes it a little hard to breath/ makes my ear drums a uncomfortable, makes everything in my extended cab silverado shake like hell) on sustained low notes, but when the bass drum hits in the mix it just makes a nasty unwanted noise.

i think this amp does a little more than what is rated and is supposed to be 1ohm stable, it seriously pounds hard but i don't like the nasty noise.

i have just heard and read a lot of awesome things about the type-R's and wondered if they would handle it a little better and sound better in this enclosure.

its most likely because they are really underpowered, box design could be a little off too.

the subs i have are rated for 300w each, so they are definately not underpowered... i built the box today to the exact specs in the link in my first post... the subs came in a prefab box and made the same sound in that box too... they are moving a whole lot, like way out of the box and way in the box on low notes so that is what makes me think the power isn't the problem...

i bought them at a pawn shop so it is likely that they have been hit for a long time or something could be wrong with them.

could anyone tell me what subs would be good for this box? would the type-R's work well in this configuration?

the box is 4.4 cubes tuned at 32hz

it doesn't matter how my gains are in either the old box or the new one, they still make that sound when i put some volume on them... i think i am going to just take them back and buy some different subs.

Oh but it does. I am not saying this is your problem, but regardelss of what box they are in, if the amp is sending a clipped signal, you will get a shitty sound and damage the subs. So it does matter where your gains are set . . .

what i was trying to say was that no matter how i set my gains (i have played with it a lot, when the volume goes up and the bass drum hits the crappy sound starts.

how do you recommend that i set my gains?

thanks for the link, that is some usefull info for sure! so far it looks like everything is fine from what my buddy said (he use to own a stereo shop), he said that the subs is probably worn out, and they are just not handling the power from the amp...

ok, now i am asking again... do you think that this amp would be ok with alpine type-R's in the same box in the link above? i want the lows that i have now with these subs but i also want that bass drum hit and it not to sound like garbage when it hits the bass drum... are there any other 12in subs other than type-R's that are reletively cheap from best buy that would be worth having? the reason i don't mind paying a little extra money to buy them at best buy is becasue i can get the extended warrantee on them and if i blow one i can just take it back and get another one... i use to have 12 baseline fosgate 12's with 12 punch 800a2 amps and i would blow subs all the time and just take them back and get another one with no questions asked... I like that!

i could care less about peak watts, it is 850w/rms @ 2ohms, that would be 425per subwoofer in a 4.4cuft vented box tuned at 32hz... it pushes the heck out of the subs that i have that are 300w each, that is why i am thinking it is 2 much amp for them instead of not enough...

again i ask, what would 2 12in type-r's sound like with 425w/rms each in a 4.4cuft vented box tuned at 32hz?

the amp is not what i am asking about, i am asking about subs because mine seems to be overpowered

please someone with experience with type-R's in a box with close to these specs, and around 425w/rms per sub sounds like.
