Building into trunk...

I have finally come up with a way to construct a box into the trunk with very little effort. If any of you know what a threaded insert is then you might catch on faster than others.

What you do is assemble the box outside of the car with finishing nails. Next you drill a pilot hole everywhere you would normally put a wood screw.Make sure it is the same diameter of the "threaded" fastener you are going to use. In my case I am using 2" stainless steel flat head allen screws which are 1/4 inch, so I will use a quarter inch drill bit. Once you have all your pilot holes drilled you can dismantle the enclosure(you may want to label each panel for quicker reference).

Where you drilled a pilot hole in the 3/4" thick edge of the wood you will now redrill to the diameter of the threaded insert. Once that is done you will mount the insert into the hole (they screw into the wood). Once you have all the inserts "inserted" all that is left is to drill out a counter sink for the flathead fasteners, this way the fastener is flush with the wood.

Now you are ready to assemble it into the car. I know it may be a little tricky when using a square port, but it only takes a little time with a tape measure and some third grade math.

The nifty thing about it is you don't need room for a drill so as long as you can fit your hand between the box and the car panels you will have enough room to turn an allen wrench.

If you want to get creative you can use threaded inserts for your subs too so that you can secure them with security screws.

Tell me what you guys think. It took me a couple days to come up with this idea because I am running two L7's in a Mitsubishi Mirage.

I will try to get some pictures up soon.

i need to read this a fre times to get iti was thinking a threaded insert was allthread, but it isnt. what is a threaded insert?
A threaded insert looks like a threaded bushing except that the outside threads are what screws into the wood so you can use machine thread screws or bolts instead of wood screws. They use them a lot on cheap computer desks.

This box is going to be ridged as he/LL. I am using 1/4 inch stainless steel allen bolts to fasten it together. I have got the front panel done and am now moving on to other panels of the enclosure. I will get pics when I get a new charger for my camera. I think I have found a new way of building "tough" boxes. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

so how do you seal the box?

thats all i wanna know.

tell me if i get it...

your basically inserting threads so your screwing into the

threads instead of screwing into the wood?

and this screwing can be done without a drill... making

the whole assembly a lot easier?

the glue is really what holds it together anyways...

*******, they haven't come to Norcal since last March for the St. Patrick's Day tour. by far the best live band.

im so pumped //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

back on topic.

thats what i thought geoff. so the threaded screws would do little more than hold the box together while it leaks air everywhere...

eh, seems like more trouble to me..
The problem is building into the trunk. Since it is so big I cannot use a drill to screw it together. That is why I am using allen head bolts so I can reach my hand where the bolt goes and insert it with an allen wrench. Of course it is "trouble", car audio is "trouble". I have seen some of the "built into trunk enclosures" on this site and their nothing to be proud of. As for sealing it I am going to be using a closed cell neoprene weather stripping. Which will take care of all leaks.

I will take pictures of it when I get charger for my camera.

Ive build alot of boxes inside my trunk, and have never really had that many problems..Just build as much outside as possible and plan before hand. Make sure you wont have anything that is hard to get to..
