Usually in a trunk you can do a couple of inches away. Always had the best sound with them being pretty close to the trunk lid. Just start at 2-3" maybe and play around with it.

The sub appears to get quieter the closer I move it to the back but that is with the trunk open

also heard to divide your subwoofer diameter in half and that should be the minimum distance away from the back

i’ll keep trying to find the sweet spot

Yeah it's going to be way quieter with the trunk open because you're losing a lot of cabin pressure. Just do whatever works out the best.

For the record I don’t think dividing your subwoofer in half has anything to do with distance. I’ve done 2” gaps down firing and my 2 18’s box’s port was about 5.25” away from my hatch. Most trunks that I’ve seen do the port like 2-4” from the rear. I’ve built and heard a lot trunk boxes.

Trunks are the worst the bass gets trapped back there. Wish I had a hatch or suv.

We had a lot of people take rear deck speakers out or even have us cut a part of the rear deck out and make a wooden rear deck with a large mesh that let air pass through.

My seat backs fold down for access its like a 60/40 but still...
Removed the 6x9 also if I want to keep the seat backs up for passengers

Is there an arm rest that you can leave down and cut an opening to the trunk to allow more airflow into the cabin?

A fourth order blow through the arm rest hole is a good way to get some real air moving. My friend has a VW CC sedan that does hair tricks with 2- 12's in a blow through the arm rest hole.
