break in time on Nightshades

I have 2 12" nightshades, bought used with about 20 minutes of play time on 1 of them and ~1 hour or so on the other. (dont know which is which, just what i was told).

I got them in and playing today, pretty dam impressive, but 1 gets a LOT warmer than the other, this is with 1500rms to each. (but not pushing anywhere near that, because im afraid of fcking one or both up). Im getting a strong smell from the subs, im assuming its glue, but they arent moving any more than 1" or so because i havent turned them up all the way.

how long do you let these babies break in? i think these are the second newest subs ive owned lol

i want to see if anyone else with the nightshades notice how warm they get while breaking it. just want to make sure there is nothing wrong with the coils on the one thats getting warm.

its definitely a significant difference in temperature between the two, and i believe its the warmer one im smelling

Now I've seen you around these boards quite often and I'm pretty sure you know quite a bit, but are you sure they are wired correctly? We all make wiring mistakes sometimes //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/tongue.gif.6130eb82179565f6db8d26d6001dcd24.gif. It's just odd that one is heating up a lot more then the other, especially on such little power. I've never played with the Nightshades personally, but power handling should be similar to my MT, and my MT would not smell or warm up at all until I full tilted on the thing for a bit of time..

And I got my MT with no play time on the recone //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/fyi.gif.9f1f679348da7204ce960cfc74bca8e0.gif

I would check wiring, make sure gains are set correctly, make sure you aren't clipping it to hell and back.

Sorry if this seems like a response towards 'noobs' for the most part, I know you aren't necessarily a noob, but just because you've been into car audio for a while doesn't mean you can't make a simple mistake like wiring incorrectly //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif.

Also, I'd recommend emailing Jacob directly if everything is wired correctly and etc. Maybe one Nightshade is fully loaded and the other has no options?

ahh no problem we all make mistakes big and small, yes i checked the loads with my DMM, checked each coil before installing the subs. ill pull them out tomorrow after work and check my wiring again. i planned on using 8awg like i have before, but it doesnt fit into the connections.. so i had to trim some off, ill make sure everything is still good there.

gain is at 1/2, no bass boost on amp or HU, bass set at 0 on hu, volume 40 out of 63 on my Pioneer.

i sent an email, but im sure he's busy with his new baby now a days. both were sold to me as Dual 1 stock options. which is fine, because all i plan to run on them is my saz3000 on the pair.

That's really strange, 1/2 gain with no boosts set shouldn't be clipping too bad if it's clipping at all. And well, checking coils and loads before means it's very likely all was done correctly...

I would pull em out and check the wiring like you said, and if not, see if you can call or email Jacob and see whatsup. Trimming the wire is no problem, I used 10 gauge and still had to trim it on the push terminals for my MT, and on my Jugg Hybrid I'm using doubled up 14 gauge, which is equivalent to 11-12 gauge I believe.

only reason im asking, is because the noticeable difference between the two, with only slightly different play time. ive never came across this before ya know, either they both get warm, or they both dont... idk

Yeah I'm sure he's been having a tougher time managing things as of lately, but well, I still have to say his customer service is near untouchable //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif. Keep this thread updated, as now I'm curious..

Especially if both were supposed to be stock //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/confused.gif.e820e0216602db4765798ac39d28caa9.gif. Haha.

Subscribed //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif. Good luck!

if nothing else, ill give them a week to see how it works out after i check them tomorrow. ill let the seller know this info tomorrow after i verify everything to make sure i didnt fck up. im bummed //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif

im thinking of all the possibilities here, the one that is getting the warmest, is farthest from the port. i havent came across that being an issue before, but i will switch sides and see if the same sub gets hot...

Yeah I know what you mean, but I highly doubt an extra 40 minutes of play time is going to effect that so drastically...

That's why I assumed it was a wiring mistake, cause if the two subs are receiving different power it'd make sense.

Do they both move in phase and the same amount? I accidentaly wired my MT opposite once (so one voice coil was wired in phase, one out of phase) and the cone didn't move but the coil did heat up. Make sure that the sub is actually playing, like when you take it out of the box maybe play it free air a little just to make sure it's playing. Since they're in the same box (I'm assuming) it could just be the pressure from the cool one using the other one like a passive radiator kind of if you can get what I'm saying //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/tongue.gif.6130eb82179565f6db8d26d6001dcd24.gif.

That shouldn't be a problem.. They mightact slightly different, but most likely nothing measurable.. But hey, I'm no engineer, yet //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif.

ok, i get what your saying. i double checked everything. but anythings still possible. both are moving identically as far as i can see. definitely not a noticeable difference in physical movement. no weird noises, just a terrible smell and a pretty warm dustcap considering the lower power i played them at

maybe they dont like your box.
could be, its seems very small to me, but thats what ive heard the nightshades like. just over 3cf net, tuned to 35hz. 60sq. in. port.

oohhhhhhhh.... i think i know what it might be .... i was recommended to try a different style port, its "tapered" you could say, 60sq. in. exiting the box, 48sq. in. entering the box/on the inside of the box. i was told this would make it louder??... maybe the air is not getting in the box properly to cool the sub off.

ill verify that tomorrow after i switch the subs from side to side to see if the other one gets warm... thanks!
