box size

ok i am building a new box for my jeep. it is for a 12"rf p1 single 4. the box size is 14wx14hx9.5d which is 0.72338. rf says the recommended volume should be 1.25. my question is is it a bad thing that the box is small by half a cubic foot? can i add polyfill to make it act like it is in the right size box?

Is it "bad"? Well, depends on how you look at it. Smaller box = higher Qtc, and all of the associated differences with having a higher Qtc enclosure (less low frequency extension, peakier freqeuncy response, degraded transient response and group delay, higher mechanical power handling, etc). If the sound still suites your fancy, then it's not "bad" I guess.

Polyfill may help some. Play around with it and see how it affects the sound (better/worse?). But polyfill shouldn't be used as a bandaid for improper enclosure size, IMO. Best to just build the box to the appropriate volume to begin with.

Anyways....after that rambling, basically the moral of the story is whether or not you like how it sounds in that enclosure.

well i have room behind the box with the angle of the seat so i guess i will salvage the box by cutting a portion out of the back and building a bump out to add more cf. it was just one of the boxes that you go out and start puting together with the big scraps that u have left over and build it and at the end think hmm how many cubes is this.
