Box Size Question

I'm curious to know what the differences between, for example, a box that's .85 cubic feet as opposed to one that's 1.0 cubic ft. Like does one make it hit cleaner or make it 'louder'. The recomended size for a sealed box on the Type R is .7-1.0. I'm not looking for all out tuned sound here. Just to know which one I should be looking at purchasing. I've tried searching but I only find info on specific box sizes for certain subs. Like maybe one size makes it tighter bass while the other gives more boom or thump.

I recently purchased a 12" Alpine Type R dual 4ohm. I'll be running either a 550 watt Alpine amp or a 600 watt Kicker. It'll be run by an Alpine head unit and it'll be in an '04 Nissan SE-R Spec V. This is why I'm curious to know what box I should purchase. Thanks for the noob help.

i had a 12 type-r in a 1.5cuft sealed box and it got pretty loud.

well they claim no bigger than 1.ft so i won't exceed that. but that's not really the type of help i'm looking for.

Build you own box, its really easy, custom boxes look much better and sound so much bettter

Bigger boxes usually mean:

1) sub can handle less power than usual

2) The sub plays lower frequencies easier

3) *usually* more SPL

I would probably put that Type R in a bigger than 1 cube I would probably put it in a 1.5ft^3 like he did

Either way you go, WATCH THE GAINS!

Over powering usually doesn't kill speakers, people kill speakers (aka CLIPPING!) most of the time. People want to run 600Watts and turn the gains more than 3/4 way up and then have the bass remote turned up to MAX, thats a good way to blow the speaker //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif So in the end they are sending 600+watts that are sending HORRIBLY DISTORTED SINE waves to the driver, in the end blowing the coils

What?

Clipping doubles your amps rated power, therefore that extra power - overpowers the speakers. Thus, killing them.

Also... as far as these two amps, which one would be the best choice for my application. I like the fact that the Alpine would match all my equipment, but the Kicker has a tad more power. (I get employee discount so price wouldn't matter so much):
