Box position vs. bass response

Hey, ive got a hatchback car and a single 12 running off 600wrms. Im wondering if theres any way to get some bass response back if face the sub into the cabin? If the sub is faced back towards the hatch it has about 1-2 inches of space b4 it hits the wall. I notice when facing towards the hatch I get the best response but it shakes the shit out of the panels so I faced it in but lost the kick, but it was cleaner (no rattles).

Your car is small enough you won't have nodes, there is very limited to no interference. It shouldn't matter where you face the sub, as long as there's atleast a few inches of room between the cone and anything else.

yeah what he said.. you just gotta fix the rattles, i have my sub facing back right now im thinking about trying it forward again... ya know how some ppl say oh face it back its better, more time for the wave to develop.. im not sure how true that really is... i think the reason alot of people like it better facing backwards is because it will add a natural crossover slope to the repsonse.. allowing you to bring up the real lows (30-40 hz) which wont be affected much... but will have a very steep drop afterwords.. but facing them forward.. you lose that... i migth be wrong... probaly am.. but i think im right //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

^x2. i have the same good response when I put my subs close to the back of the vehicle facing the wall, but it would shake like crazy. deadener did the trick.

deadner...
Ive used some already. The car is an 06 scion xa and is made like shit. No matter how much I use it will rattle something somewhere else. My drivers door has a rattle from a loose part that I cant fix or get to. If you have a special way of fixing panels from rattle other than spray foam than let me know please (cheap). It seems like all I do sometimes is chase noise.

most hatches yield the highest SPL with sub up, ports back.

Your rattling is a result of the higher SPL but you can solve the rattling with deadener and expanding foam.

If I'm not mistaken, which I probably am, it has more to do with loading the waves instead of time to develope. Like horn or corner loading, the waves are compressed then expand out through the rest of the space resulting in a slight gain.

To the OP the rattle is probably really just due to the fact all your sub's energy is going directly into the panels and stuff in the rear there and the only way to help it is to pad the points of contact with foam or something like that. Had the same problem with the van, some of RaamAudio's foam mat fixed it right up.
