Boston Pro60 or Z6???

and going from inifinity to boston Z's is QUITE the step. night and day difference, you'll never look at infinity anything the same again //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif
lol. I've been running around a little lately trying to find a good shop to install for me and just about fell on my *** today hearing some crap outa this one shop today. I laid out the system I wanted them to install (this place had Alpine as their main line), including either a set of Z6's or K2P's and they came around telling me R-types would be so much better for me since some of my musical taste features distortion. (Ministry, NIN, etc.) ROFL. Doesn't matter that some of NIN's tracks are beautifully clean and I might want to hear that, or that other music I listen to is quite clean, nope, speakers that are built to reproduce clean music won't be able to do that after a dose of Ministry according to these guys. They of course went on to tell me that Eclipse and Pioneer Premier don't compare to Alpine, JL Amps are not nearly as good as the V12 series, and 10W7 and 10W6V2 are no better than R-series subs, just pricier!

Bear in mind, I'm not knocking Alpine at all, but if you look at the quality of crap they were trying to sell compared to the quality of crap I want to bring in to them the whole conversation was a joke. Oh, and get this. Their "sincere" suggestion was to run that tiny, 1-din Alpine center channel with their setup to help preserve a good soundstage. I'm sorry but in a 5.1 system sure, get a center channel, but I am putting a stereo system in a 2-seater, no rears, and I know if you set it up right, power it right, and eq it right the image will be just fine. [/rant] **** it's hard to find a good shop to just install!

edit to add: ...and I'm not so much knocking the type-r's here either, just I don't think they are even anywhere near the Infinity Kappa Perfects, yet since these guys sold 'em they just rock. :/

Ok, I have a question about the Z6's, and I figured this thread would be good for it.

I currently have Polk MMC6500 6.5 components up front, so obviously, the Z6's would be a serious upgrade. I have a JL 300/4 running my fronts and rears (75 to each), and I know that 75 to a Z6 is not really enough. If I upgraded to a JL 450/4 (which provides 150 x2, and 75 x2) and used the 150 x 2 to drive the Z6's (leaving the 75 x 2 for the rear) and did not bi-amp, is that going to work out? Or do I really need to more than 150 to do justive to the Z6's?

Thanks

Dave

My own opinion is that the 450/4 is just about the perfect amp to use to bi-amp those suckers. (Obviously the 2x75 at the tweets) I wouldn't say the way you want to use it wouldn't work out, it will work, but you would definitely benefit from getting more power into the set if you can.

edit to add: jus noticed the sig, nice ride caelric! My setup should be quite similar, 06 Z, just wondering where you would put the 450/4. I ruled it out for me 'cause it's a little too large to fit in the cubby behind the driver's seat and I don't want an amp rack anywhere else. I'm thinking a 300/2 on the mids, something else in the 75x2 range on the tweets (there's a little BA amp I'm looking at there), and a 500/1 on a 10W6V2. With those three amps, a cap and the BA x-overs, I'm outa room unless I use cargo space for a rack.

if you pull the cover off the space behind the drivers seat, you would be suprised how much room is actually behind there. it goes back quite a ways too, i don't think you'd have a problem hiding a 450/4 in there. if you have the bose setup, you'll have to remove the factory sub to see how much room is really behind there. enough to fit a 10w7 //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif i would really recommend the stealthbox in that car though, because it rocks in a serious way and is pretty much invisible with the hatch closed. that leaves you the entire cavity to put both amps, xovers, any anything else in and you don't lose the storage space behind the passenger seat. definitely a small car, space is at a premium. take some measurements of what you really have to work with inside there. you will probably have to remove the mounting ring for the factory sub (even most non-bose cars without the factory sub still have the mounting plate). remove the center console, the 2 side pieces that go up to the window, over the strut bar, and in a triangle right behind the rear speakers (it's all one piece) and then you can remove the large panel that goes all the way across behind the seats. it isn't all that bad really, just a lot of little plastic clips //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif then there's a dozen or so 10mm bolts holding in that mounting plate for the factory 10" sub. pull that out and you got lots of room //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

Well, since mine is a G35, I have a bit more room to work with. I have the whole trunk! But, since I wanted to save cargo space, I actually removed the spare tire, and that is where my amps are. If you click on the link in my sig, there are some pics; mostly, it's about my carPC install, but some pics of the amps in there.

@ thefunkybunch: Oh yeah, I'm pretty familiar with the area, the stock sub spot was the "cubby" I was referring to. No Bose in this car, I learned my lesson with an '03 Maxima, so just nice open space waiting to be filled. I am sure I could get amps with bigger footprints in there, but I'm planning to keep things pretty much directly behind the panel so some of this is a self-imposed restriction. I did look pretty hard at the Stealthbox too, the only problem I have with it is that it covers an anchor for a child car seat, and I will want to take the little guy for spin in the car.....after I get the passenger airbag kill switch installed. I'm going to go with the semi-classic under strutbar box for the sub in mine.

@ caelric: lol, I guess I haven't looked to closely at the G's although they are beautiful cars, I assumed the coupes were liftback, not trunked. Nice looking work so far btw, not to mention your taste in color.

Nope, they are trunked. Small trunk, not too much bigger than the Z's, but a trunk nonetheless.

And I like black, definitely; I used to have a pearl white 300ZXTT, which was beautiful in it's own right, but I like my black G better. Althouh it's a ***** to take care of!

I assume your Z is black? I almost got one of the anniversary 2005 model Z's, but then my wife mentioned that we really did need 4 seats instead of two, and you know how that goes.

Well, I bit. Bought the the 450/4, and Z6's, now just waiting for them to get here.

Still thinking about bi-amping them, but them I need to by another amp, along the lines of a 75x2 or so to run the rear speakers. I have tried it without rear fill, and I just like it better (to my ears) with the rear fill, despite what everyone says. It's my ears, dammit! Heh.

Anyways, now I am looking for a decent 75x2, and a place to mount it.

Yeah, black track model, and lol, yeah I do know how the wife/kids and 4 seats goes. I drove a black 03 Maxima around for 3 1/2 years because of that thinking. As it turned out for us over that time, her SUV was the vehicle of choice anyway for the times we needed to get more than 2 in a vehicle so.....well god bless her, she gave me a Z keychain for Christmas, that was a greenlight! //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/naughty.gif.94359f346c0f1259df8038d60b41863e.gif Haha, looking at your sig and the mods you've done it looks like you are every bit into these cars as I am. I'm sure I'll run into you on some of the Z/G sites sooner or later.

Back on topic, you are right about the rear-fill decision of course, you gotta go with whatever makes you happy. This will actually be my first go without rears, but during the install I will run the rear RCA to the amp area in case I decide down the road that I need the fill myself.

Sorry if this was asked before, but how do the SL60 tweeters compare with the Pro60 tweeters? Are the pro60 tweeters much harsher than the SL60's?

I'm not sure I am going to upgrade yet, but the setup would be 150w from my JL300/4 to each woofer then 60w from my alpine amplifier to each tweeter. So it would be 210w RMS to each side. I hope its enough power to still be a considerable upgrade from the SL's.

the pro's can be very harsh indeed. with the right tuning and tweeter attenuation, they can be controlled. especially if you bi-amp them. personally i went from a set of the sl60's to the z6's. the difference was about equivilent to switching from the stock speakers on the factory radio to the GT22 and the SL60's. yeah, it was that big of an improvement.

ok thanks. Yeah I dont have the power or money to spend on Z6's but I have these SX50's i bought for the rear and i've now become smart and realized rear speakers (especially in a small 2 seater) dont help. But I figured I would sell my SX50's and SL60's and upgrade to Pro60s.

glad i saw this thread. I also have the infinity perfect 6.1's and i just can't get used to them. i don't like the way they sound at all. I was going to get the z6's but i was talked out of them and into the perfects. I have tried tuning them numerous times and i just can't get them to sound right. I thought i was upgrading coming from the CDT CL62's but they were just harsher. I am definately going to pick up the z6's after reading this.

It looks like I'll upgrade to the Pros. I also found that the JL300/4 is a bit underrated and puts out more like 95/4. (190x2) and add that to the 60w I'll be using to power the tweeters I'll be right at 250. I'd think that should make the Pros happy enough. If the Pro tweeters are really that harsh (I could always turn them down using the gain on the amp) I could always upgrade to some nice silk tweeters later on.

My next upgrade needs to be getting rid of this little 8w0 excuse for a sub I have.
