Boston Pro60 or Z6???

Are you hardcore set on the Boston Pro60's or Z6? If not for the price my suggestion would be to check out Focal. Their K2 line is priced to the Z6's and their Utopia is a little above that, but they make some speakers that to me sound much better than Boston. Checkout something with a lot of mind range and I will often find the Boston's lacking. That of course is my personal experience though. I would suggest at least give it a listen. If you are doing this because of getting a good deal, check out the Polyglass or Access by Focal, I've had many people agree that even the entry level components by Focal sound better than the Boston Z6.

Forgot to add, to me Focal tweeters sound much better as well. Boston uses aluminum tweeters which can very easily be way too bright and have a tinny sound to them. It's something hard to describe in a forum but easy to identify in comparison. Even on entry level Focal uses reverse dome tweeter with a phase plug and a surround to keep the accuracy of metal but give the more natural sound of silk tweeters. The phase plug help keep them from blasting. They also have some of the flattest responses for their tweeters. Alright, there are my two cents.

Thanks Colin+M, some people get touchy about things like this, but I thought it was a pretty relevant question.
We are all here to learn. Not to mention its on topic so we both can take something from it;)

In regards to the Focals, I have listened to them before and liked them. I am not deadset on any certain set, thats my problem mainly. I just need to get something and be done with it. I am tired of looking/researching and not enjoying.

I am going to Tweeter tomorrow to audition them side by side, I'll just have to trust the ole' ears.

Thanks for the input, I have been considering the K2P's from Focal.

Not to steal the thread here, but I've been mulling over my options and recently decided to get some Z's myself. I'd been looking at the focals and planing to use a 75Wx4 amp on them but since I think I would be happier with the BA's I think I need to re-evaluate that. They are pretty power hungry, what would you guys recommend as an appropriate SQ amp for these beasts? Hoping to find a 4-channel to bi-amp them in the $400 - $500 range.

not totally sure what that means, but thanks? //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

the Z's are a very natural sound, it's hard to describe. if you compare it as some speakers are running 90 mph through a forest, then the Z's are more of a graceful, peaceful walk through the park on a nice day. very smooth and easy on the ears, and even though they are an aluminum dome tweeter, are not fatiguing, but very detailed and accurate. no matter what kind of music i throw at them, they sound great.

and no, they won't rip your face off like the pro's will :p

definitely buy more amplifier than you will think you will ever need on them. caues they'll take a good amount of juice, but also there's nothing like having sick amounts of headroom //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

What amp would you guys recommend for the Z6's???

I plan on bi-amping them and throwing a JL Audio 300/2 on the mids and a 300/2 on the tweets. I am using these because i already have them.

Any suggestions?

You could do that. You'd get 200 watts at 3 ohms and would have the flexiblity, but would be limited in power. Re-read Marky Mark and The Funky Bunch post on biamping. Doubling the power would give you a 3db gain which would hardly be detectable, but you would gain the headroom which is a very nice thing to have!! I would personally find a nice 250 x 2 for a good price and call it day, but you already have the amps, so......

BTW, I just realized what a post ***** I've become......makes me feel kinda naughty //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/blush.gif.99bc659ee2012b7d826165e26fb5eebe.gif

actually it will be 150watts to each mid and 150watts to each tweeter at 3 ohms due to the "RIPS" tech on the JL amps.

I know 150 to each tweet is more than enough, I just don't know about the mids

Right, forgot about that. Must be why I never liked the slash series amps all that much....other than that they are very nice amps. Not sure if 150 on the mids would really maximize their potential, but would still sound good nonetheless //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/cool.gif.3bcaf8f141236c00f8044d07150e34f7.gif

I'm sure it will be a step up from my Infinity Kappa Perfect 6.1's, although besides the so so midbass aren't that bad of a set for the money. I was running the infinitys off one amp, so i am getting better comps and doubling the power that ='s audio bliss right? I hope so. I am tired of debating and researching, haha.

150 would be MORE than enough on the tweets... i run what boston rates at 55x2 on my tweets and it's plenty. 150 would do well on the mids as well. i don't think you'd really be leaving anything at the table if that's what you're asking //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

that would leave you with plenty of headroom and plenty of tweaking to do to get them to sound juuuuust the way you want. take your time setting them up and EQ'ing them. don't rush it. get some good quality audiophile CD's and start tweaking from there. listen until you can hear the hi-hat pedal squeaking //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif i'm not gonna lie, setting them up takes a little time. it took me about a month to finally get them to sound the way i want, but i'm more hyper-anal than most. the end result is well worth it though when you can feel the hairs stand up on the back of your neck during songs. eric clapton's cd one more car, one more driver will do it every time. great disc //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif check out http://www.chesky.com for a lot of great music and outstanding recording quality.

and going from inifinity to boston Z's is QUITE the step. night and day difference, you'll never look at infinity anything the same again //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif
