Boss Equalizer with Head Unit

Hello,

I'm trying to put in an equalizer in the front of my 90 Eagle Talon underneath the CD Player I will be receiving in the mail soon. I was wondering of the following questions I have:

1) what do I connect the EQ's "Remote On" with? I was thinking that goes with the either the 12V Battery/Constant or the Ignition power.

2) Illumination connects with IGN power, right? I think that has worked for me on my friend's car a few years back before he sold it.

3) along with having the HU's IGN power and ILL connected to the car's IGN power, can I put in the EQ's power along? that'd be a 4 way connection (or 5 way depending on question number one), and some electronic friends of mine says it shouldn't create a short or anything, but wanted to ask someone from here.

4) Can I extend the HU's Ground using the left-over speaker wires that came with my speakers I put in? My car's HU doesn't come with a ground wire since it grounds on metal contact, so I gotta put a ring terminal end on them (for both the EQ and HU) and find a screw to use to ground them.

5) should I use the same screw for both ground, or use seperate screws, 1 for each?

Thanks for any help, even if you can't understand or answer all of the questions. I tried my best to simplify my questions as simple as possible. Any questions, please ask! Thanks again in advance!

1) remote goes to the HU remote wire

2) Illumination connects to the illumination wire

3) first off.. have you even bought the correct wiring harness for your vehicle? this would solve most of the "ghettoness" you have going one here. Splice the power wire from the EQ and the HU to the main one.

4) keep the ground as short as possible. but do what you gotta do.

5) using the same grounding point is fine

Also, go to bestbuy or circuit city and ask them for the Metra 70-1743 wire harness. This will help with your integration

I have the correct wire harness and mounting kit.

After I posted that message I realized question number 2 was stupid. In my best friend's car there was no Illumination coming from the car, but there was one coming from the Head unit. The same with my very first car I had, 87 Olds Cutlass Ciera. What I did then was just connect the ILL to the power, with a 3 way connection, and it works that way. It doesn't work without it that way in both cases. However, with this car, there is an ILL coming from the car, so I'll just connect the two ILL directly. If it doesn't work, I'll try connecting both ILL to the Power, and hopefully that'll work.

I do have a question about number one though... the HU doesn't have a remote wire, unless that's under a different name. I've downloaded the manual ahead of time at Jensen's website, while I'm waiting for the CD Player to be delivered. It doesn't have anything labeled as "Remote" for the harness that connects to the HU.

By any chance is Remote On the equivilant to the 12v Ignition/Switched on the HU? If so that'll be a 4 way spliced connection with the 3 red power wires. If not, what should I do?

as for the power, I'll join all three ends (HU, 12V, and EQ) together. unless I add the REMOTE ON from the EQ

I'll just hope that there'll be a nearby screw that I don't need to add onto the ground. Speaking of which, I just took a look at the wiring harness and it has a "Dimmer Ground" but no Dimmer Positive. Would I have to put a terminal ring on the end of that wire to ground it as well with the other two grounds? I don't understand why it would have a Dimmer Ground but not a Dimmer +.

Just for your information, I've done car audio installations before. This is the toughest one for me though, because I'm using an EQ for the first time and because of the Eagle Talon being significantly different than any other cars I've worked with. Thanks a lot for you help, and I thank you in advance for the next response to this post. Hopefully everything will be cleared up after this. I am expecting my CD Player by the beginning of next week.

thanks again!

According to Jensen... there is a remote wire. Its a dark blue color.

Connecting the illumination wire from the car to the one on the EQ is what should work.

when you say dimmer ground.. I assume you're looking at the harness for the car and not on of the CD player. Just leave it disconnected. tape it up though so it won't touch anything.

here's the manual guide in PDF format

http://www.audiovox.com/manuals/owners/MPH4210_021904_Final.pdf

the wire information is on page 3 of 20

the Blue wire you speak of is the Power Antenna, which will be connected to the blue wire on my harness for the car.

I found this really cool site, that tells you step by step how to install a unit in your car, and it does it for every make and model except newer cars, for obvious reasons.

http://www.installdr.com/

according to that site for my car, it seems like the Light Dimmer Wire (which is for some odd reason labeled as Dimmer Ground) and the Illuminiation don't get used... why not?

I still don't know what to do with the Remote On wire, so when I get the CD Player I'm gonna try to see if connecting that to the 12v ignition/switched line, unless you got another suggestion. Thanks!

EDIT

is REMOTE ON the same as illumination? that's why I got confused, because it says Remote On, and not Illumination. I was thinking that Remote On would mean for it to be remotely turned on, i.e. when the car starts up with the ignition, and there for I was thinking the Remote On should be connected to the Ignition.

if you read further on into the manual.. it tells you to use the Blue wire as the antenna AND the remote wire.

The dimmer wires dont get used because your headunit does not have a dimmable display.

your other questions should be answered buy what I just answered

Here, I'll just describe all the wires from all three sources, including the Head Unit which I will use that PDF manual I linked to...

EQ

Red - 12v power

Black - ground

orange - Remote On

Harness for car for factory connectors

Red - Ignition Power

Orange - Illumination

Yellow - Constant Power

Orange/Black - Light Dimmer Wire (I have the end taped up right now as you suggested)

Blue - Power Antenna

the 8 speaker wires

CD Player (according to Jensen's website)

Dark Blue - Power Antenna

Black - Ground

Yellow - Memory/Battery

Red - Accessory/Ignition

the 8 speaker wires (no color mentioned)

there's only 12 wires coming from the CD Player, and 13 wires coming from the car's harness. According to the Install Doctor, like you said, the Dimmer would not be used. The Ground from the CD Player has to be connected to the chassis, so that leaves me with one wire extra from the harness, which turns out to be the illumination. However, from my experience the Illumination should be used! Otherwise the dash's light may not work. SOOOO... I would like to wire it as following:

- all three RED power (HU, Car, and EQ) and the Illumination from the car together, to power both units and the Dash Light

- the two yellows (Car and HU) together for time, radio presets, and other memory functions

- the 2 grounds (HU and EQ) connected to the chassis via a screw and ring terminal connector

- the speakers should be color coded nearly the same, which won't be difficult.

- the two blues (Car and HU) for the power antenna.

that leaves me with just the Remote On from the EQ, which I'm still confused as to if that means when it should be remotely turned on (i.e. with Ignition of car) or if that is in fact the same as Illumination. Either way though, it would be connected in a 5 way splice with the 3 Red power and the Illumination from the car. OR, as you once suggested, that should be connected with the blue wires, which are both for the Power Antenna. I just don't understand why it has anything to do with the Power Antenna.

If it weren't for that freakin' Remote On wire, I wouldn't still be here typing this at 6AM in the morning. haha

basically to sum it all up, I just need to know what to do with the Remote On wire, and then I should be fine with installing the CD Player and EQ in my car once I get the CD Player, and once I get my car back from the garage (Turbocharger died on me, having a new one put in this week).

sorry, was typing what I just said as you submitted that, and didn't get the notification through my email yet. Thanks for all your help, and I apologize if I've been bothersome to you. I didn't read the whole manual. I'm trying to read it now, but I can't find where it says that about the Blue wire. I'm not doubting you, I just probably can't find it. I'll take your word about it though. what page is it on in the manual?

That makes sense about the dimmer. Thanks for your help.

If you look on page three of that same manual under Preparation (continued) > Wiring > Wiring Diagrams/Color Codes you will see that the blue wire can be connected to the power antenna and the amplifier turn on

WOW, I must really be tired... I can't believe I missed that! Sorry man, I know I've been annoying. Well, I'm gonna wait for the arrival of the CD Player. I should be getting my car back within a few days I believe. I'll let you know how it turns out. I'll even take a picture to show you my setup, and put it in my image section for CarAudio.com.

THANK YOU SO MUCH AGAIN! I really appreciate your help.

well, I don't know where your last post is, because I got a notification that you posted a reply and the very first thing it said in the email was "you're starting to irritate me". If you deleted or something, then you got rid of it pretty quickly, but I still got the email notification.

I agree with you now when it comes to the Remote On wire... but the manual did not say anything specifically about "Remote On" nor Amplifier Turn On as you said. It only says "connect to power antenna or amplifier". Nothing about turn on, or remote on.

I actually did see the amplifier part before, just didn't think it included an Equalizer, which is not named "Amplifier". However, I am NOT disagreeing with you. I will try without the Illumination. I thought the illumination was to illuminate the unit at night when I would have the headlights on. Anyways... I'll let you know what happens next week. You won't hear from me again for atleast til the weekend. I don't expect to get the unit until next monday at the earlier however.

even though I'm "irritating" I still want to apologize for being annoying, and to thank you for all your help in the past several hours. Please don't think I don't appreciate it, because I sincerely do. Thanks again

you werent irritating me at all......and i was being serious....im sure you werent annoying anyone. some are here for help and others are here to help...its a win win situation...sorry if it came across as scarcasm but it was meant with sincerity.
I'm talking about the other guy who was helping me. He replied to a post saying "You are starting to irritate me" but for some reason it didn't post on here. I got the notification that he replied with that message though... I'd quote it here, but I don't wanna be the bad guy here, when I'm trying to be helpful and understanding. He then went on practically seeming like he's getting cocky and started saying like "I already told you" blah blah blah. He confused the heck outta me though, all over that freakin' Remote On wire.

Anyways, I figured it out now with his and your help. I always thought the Illumination was to illuminate the CD Player at night when it is dark, but I guess that the illumination part is INSIDE the unit which gets powered by the power wire when needed. I just don't know though. It happened to me once where I needed the illumination wire connected to the power, and the unit wasn't one of those dimming units. But I'm gonna try it without the ill first, and turn the headlights on to see if it stays on. If not, then I'll try connect the Illumination to the power, as that has worked for me in the past.

Thanks for you help, I appreciate it. I'll post pictures of my system setup once I get it in the car.
